Dempo (Sumatra): (10 Apr) A phreatic eruption at the volcano was detected by the Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) at 01:39 on 7 April, lasting almost three minutes according to seismic data. Phreatic explosions form when the ejecta consists solely of old country rock, indicating interaction between water and heated conduit-rocks rather than magma itself. A thick gray ash plume rose roughly 2.5 km above the summit and drifted eastward, with light ashfall reported up to 4.7 km away in that direction. … [read more] … [show less] GNSS measurements showed no major deformation between 23 March and 6 April, but tilt data from the Tugu Rimau Station indicated inflation beginning on 2 April.
Kilauea (Hawai’i): (10 Apr) Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Washington (VAAC) issued the following report: VA EMS HAS DISP …9 Apr: The 44th episode 44 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu crater at the summit of Kīlauea began at 11:10 a.m. HST on April 9, about one hour ago. The eruption follows essentially the same pattern as almost all preceding episodes over the past 16 months. Lava fountains are now reaching heights around 1,000 ft (300 m) and lava flows are resurfacing the crater floor. … [read more] … [show less] Ground-level sensors near the eruptive vents indicate that winds are blowing from the south, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the north from Halemaʻumaʻu. All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
