Can’t Get to the Bakery? These Fab Vegan Cookies Are at Your Grocer’s

Once you’ve filled your grocery cart with all the essentials—like fruit, veggies, tofu, and pasta—you might find yourself wandering down the snack aisle. To make your browsing a bit easier, we’ve compiled a handy list of all the vegan cookies that you might find in your local grocery store. These pre-made treats make it easy to enjoy a midday pick-me-up or just a quick dessert to end your day on a sweet note. And the best thing is that they don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients.

Other store-bought cookies might contain milk from cows whose babies are stolen from them. Cows are curious, gentle animals who form strong bonds with each other. In the dairy industry, all cows who are used for their milk are eventually killed—and they usually only live to a quarter of their natural life expectancy because of the stress of being constantly kept pregnant or lactating. Other ingredients you should look out for are eggs and honey, which harm chickens and bees.

Refer to this list to find your new favorite store-bought vegan cookies:

PETA to Pentagon: Don’t Blame Thailand for Cobra Gold Bloodlust

Please see the following statement from PETA Vice President of International Laboratory Methods Shalin Gala regarding a report that the Pentagon is putting the responsibility for the cruelty of the Cobra Gold military training exercises on the Royal Thai Armed Forces:

It’s disingenuous for the Pentagon to blame Thailand solely for the horrific animal killings that occur during the annual Cobra Gold exercise. The U.S. Armed Forces cosponsors this drill and sent nearly 5,500 service members to it last year, using a portion of the more than $12 million of taxpayer money designated for training. If the Department of Defense is truly committed to ensuring the “best practices for the humane treatment of animals,” that surely shouldn’t involve beheading cobras to drink their blood or chomping on the live bodies of other animals. It’s time for the military to take seriously the dangerous zoonotic disease threat posed by Cobra Gold and permanently disavow all participation in the use of live animals during this training.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.

Urgent: PETA’s Tips for Keeping Dogs Safe Around Frozen Lakes and Ponds

Following reports that a dog had to be rescued from a frozen river in Northampton, PETA is sharing tips for keeping animals safe—particularly given a recent increase in reports of dogs falling into frozen lakes and ponds.

While some of these dogs have been rescued, others have died, and so have some guardians who tried to rescue them. (Please see these recent stories—from just the past week—covering incidents in Arkansas, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.) The following precautions can help dog guardians prevent such tragedies:

  • Always keep dogs on a secure leash and in a harness during walks.
  • Never let dogs run free near open bodies of water.
  • In backyards with unfenced swimming pools, always walk dogs on a leash in other parts of the yard.

PETA also urges guardians to let companion animals live indoors with the rest of the family, as “backyard dogs” and “outdoor cats”—like those featured in the documentary Breaking the Chain—suffer terribly from frostbite and can die of exposure. There were at least 37 cold weather–related companion animal deaths in 2019, and those are just the ones that were reported—most aren’t. This video shows just a few of the dogs PETA’s fieldworkers have found suffering in the cold this winter.

PETA has released a cold-weather public service announcement. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Swap Cruelty to Chicks for These ‘Eggs-cellent’ Vegan Eggs

The evidence couldn’t be more yolk and white: Eggs belong to chickens, not humans. Vegan eggs are for humans and chicken eggs are for chicks.

Things to Know About 'Backyard Chickens' and Speciesism

Are Eggs Good for You?

If you’re thinking about chicken eggs, the answer is clear: No! Chicken eggs, which are a natural part of chicken menstruation, are not meant for humans. Hens aren’t egg machines—they’re mothers.

Would You Eat A Chicken's Period?

Whether sold by the dozen in grocery stores or bundled at farmer’s markets, eggs are a product of cruelty. The egg industry exploits hens, steals their eggs, and crams them into metal wire cages or sheds. Dismissing the suffering of chickens simply because they don’t look like us is speciesist and wrong.

However, one type of egg is kind to both hens and your heart: vegan eggs. Most animal-free eggs are also cholesterol-free, and all are free from bloody practices in the egg industry.

Where to Buy Eggs? (The Vegan Kind, of Course)

1. DON’T shop for Eggland’s Best.

This company is good with the spin but still jam-packs millions of chickens in buildings where they’ll never set foot outdoors. Hens are caring mothers who “talk” to their chicks before they hatch and teach them to recognize their mother’s voice in a flock.

DO shop for Follow Your Heart’s vegan egg.

Leave the dozen in the dairy case and opt for the VeganEgg. You’ll help spare hens a lifetime of misery and lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, too. This egg made from soy protein can create a fluffy omelet, a proper English breakfast, or jalapeño poppers—see other magic recipes here.

2. DON’T fund Nellie’s Free Range Eggs.

This two-faced brand tried to deceive consumers about its so-called “free-range” eggs—but PETA’s eyewitness footage tells another story. Take a look at the way hens really lived on a farm that supplied eggs to Nellie’s—which are “Certified Humane.”

About 376 million hens are raised for eggs in the U.S. every year. Many of these inquisitive birds are crammed into cages or sheds, and all of them are loving mothers exploited for profit.

DO let us know if you were misled by false claims about “free-range” eggs.

Were You Duped by ‘Cage-Free’ Eggs?

3. DON’T pay for Vital Farms.

All farms get their chickens from hatcheries, where male chicks are mercilessly killed as the industry does not see them as profitable. More than 100 million male chicks are killed by the egg industry every year. They’re typically tossed into trash bags to suffocate, gassed, or ground up alive.

DO opt for the Zero Egg.

Choose an egg that scrambles and bakes into frittatas instead of a breakfast that’s a death sentence for chicks. These powdered vegan eggs are made from a unique blend of plant proteins, including chickpeas and soy.

4. DON’T buy Cal-Maine Foods.

A PETA investigator documented that hens had no place to stand or lie down except on the wire flooring of their cages. Unable even to spread their wings in severely cramped conditions, many hens resorted to pulling out their own feathers. Workers at this factory beat chickens against metal boxes and gassed them before dumping them—some still alive—into trucks.

DO try Simply Eggless.

This liquid vegan egg will please your palate. Made from lupin beans, it works well in everything from a breakfast scramble to baked goods.

5. DON’T pick up eggs from Trillium Farm Holdings.

In one incident, PETA’s undercover investigator found a severely injured hen still alive in a trash bin. A supervisor had clumsily attempted to kill the bird and then let her languish for two more days before another worker finally killed her. One worker was seen pulling a live hen’s head off.

DO pick up PETA’s favorite vegan eggs that are kind to chickens.

Check out these easy cooking replacements like applesauce or ground flaxseed for all your baking needs. BeLeaf’s vegan fried egg, made from only natural ingredients, is the perfect topper for a breakfast scramble or sandwich.

Crack the Cruelty With Vegan Eggs

The most meaningful action that you can take to help chickens is to stop eating them and their eggs. Instead of thoughtlessly boiling an egg, consider how hens care for their young and how roosters recognize one another—and speak up for chickens suffering in the food industry with the click of a button:

University of Washington (UW) Made ‘Knowingly False’ Statement About Primate Center’s Role in COVID-19 Vaccine

A federal agency says that an official with the University of Washington (UW) made “knowingly false” statements when she publicly claimed that monkey experiments at the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) helped create Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine. In an e-mail obtained by PETA, the Office of Research Integrity of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services told UW that while this did not constitute research fraud, UW could take “any administrative actions” internally. PETA, which alerted federal officials to the lie, is calling on UW to retract the statement publicly and to remove any individuals involved from their positions.

Internal documents from UW, obtained by PETA through a public records request, do not indicate that university officials have taken any action.

Last November, PETA science adviser Lisa Jones-Engel, Ph.D., attended a public meeting of UW’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, which oversees the use of animals in the university’s laboratories. As this video excerpt shows, the committee’s chair, Jane Sullivan, read a prepared statement saying that primate center experimenter Deborah Fuller tested the Moderna vaccine on monkeys. When Jones-Engel requested a clarification, Sullivan stated, “You can look at the minutes when the story is published.” She later added that Jones-Engel could e-mail her after the meeting. In a follow-up e-mail exchange, Sullivan admitted that the Moderna vaccine was unrelated to experiments at the WaNPRC.

“If UW can openly lie about its role in the Moderna vaccine development, we must question the integrity of the entire institution,” says Dr. Jones-Engel. “It’s a serious violation of public trust, and UW must take action to correct it.”

The WaNPRC’s long history of negligence, errors, and incompetence has resulted in numerous citations for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. Infant monkeys have died from physical trauma after they were placed in new groups and not properly monitored. In 2019, when an experimenter insisted that a surgery begin, even though a monkey had not been fasted, the monkey vomited, choked, went into respiratory arrest, and died. In another incident, a monkey who was used in a painful procedure was given an opioid analgesic that had been diluted, likely resulting in inadequate pain relief. Monkeys at the primate center have died from strangulation, starvation, dehydration, and veterinary error.

PETA has released video footage showing monkeys filmed by WaNPRC experimenters. It shows how monkeys live for years, sometimes decades, inside small metal cages barely bigger than their bodies.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. The group’s letter is available upon request. For more information, please visit PETA.org, click here, or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
