Nationwide Crisis as Dogs Left in Hot Cars in Missouri—PETA Provides Urgent Tips Here

A dog left inside a hot car in Springfield was rescued by police recently, and similar reports nationwide are rolling in at an out-of-control rate. For some dogs, including a K-9 who recently died after being left behind in a patrol car, help comes too late. Already this year, 22 dogs have been reported dead from heat-related causes. (Figures are far likely higher, as most heat-related companion animal deaths go unreported.)

This week’s high temperatures put dogs at a high risk of enduring heat prostration and dying, so PETA is issuing an urgent warning to anyone with a dog: Never leave them inside vehicles, and please be sure to do the following.

  • Touch the pavement before walks to ensure that it won’t burn dogs’ foot pads.
  • Be alert to a long, curled-up tongue and heavy panting, as dogs cannot sweat as humans can and heat builds up inside their bodies.
  • Walk only in the shade or on earth or grass, and neverleave animals alone (On Memorial Day weekend, PETA fieldworkers discovered the body of a dog who had died after being left chained up in the hot sun.)

PETA thanks Springfield police and other rescuers for taking action and urges everyone to support the Hot Cars Act of 2021, which would require automakers to install technology in vehicles to detect the presence of an animal or a child and alert drivers when someone is in the backseat.

Anyone who leaves animals in hot cars or outside to suffer in severe weather may be prosecuted for cruelty.

Urgent: PETA Warns That Dogs May Die in Extreme Heat Wave in Montana—Vital Tips Here

This week’s scorching temperatures—expected to reach triple digits in Glasgow—will put dogs at high risk of enduring heat prostration and dying, so PETA is issuing an urgent warning to anyone with a dog. Please be sure to do the following:

  • Touch the pavement to ensure that it won’t burn dogs’ foot pads.
  • Be alert to a long, curled-up tongue and heavy panting, as dogs cannot sweat as humans can and heat builds up inside their bodies.
  • Walk only in the shade or on earth or grass, and never leave animals outdoors in extreme heat or inside vehicles.

This May, PETA fieldworkers discovered the body of a dog who had died after being left chained up in the hot sun, and similar reports nationwide are starting to roll in. Recently, a law-enforcement officer mistakenly left his patrol car with a dog inside it, and the K-9 succumbed to heat prostration and died. Last year, more than 31 dogs were reported dead from heat-related causes. (Figures are far likely higher, as most heat-related deaths go unreported.)

PETA also urges everyone to support the Hot Cars Act of 2021, which would require automakers to install technology in vehicles to detect the presence of a child or an animal and alert drivers when someone is in the backseat.

Anyone who leaves animals outside to suffer in severe weather may be prosecuted for cruelty.

Bezos’ Blastoff Begets PETA’s Cheeky Ad Blitz in Van Horn

With Jeff Bezos headed into space in a few days, PETA is counting down to its local ad blitz making the point that artery-clogging meat and dairy foods can mean a failure to launch in the bedroom and that we should all grasp the gravity of this situation: The future of humanity could be jeopardized if we don’t eat properly.

“If we Earthlings all went vegan, we’d stop the negative impact of animal-based agriculture on this planet and we wouldn’t need to head out into space,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA has all the vegan starter kits, recipes, and more needed to help keep America’s rockets ready for liftoff.”

The saturated fat in meat, eggs, and dairy can cause high cholesterol, which leads to plaque buildup and hardening of the arteries, slowing the flow of blood to all the body’s organs, not just the heart. Low-fat vegan meals have been shown to address the physical causes involved in the vast majority of impotence cases, including high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, prostate cancer or inflammation, and hormonal imbalances. And of course, each person who goes vegan prevents nearly 200 animals every year from enduring daily suffering and a terrifying death.

Because Bezos’ launch date (July 20) is also the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, PETA also plans to place the ad in Huntsville, Alabama, near the U.S. Space & Rocket Center; in Houston, near the Johnson Space Center; and on Merritt Island, Florida, near the Kennedy Space Center.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
