Urgent: PETA Warns That Dogs May Die in Extreme Heat Wave in Saskatchewan—Vital Tips Here

This week’s scorching temperatures—expected to reach the mid-30s in Regina and Saskatoon—will put dogs at high risk of enduring heat prostration and dying, so PETA is issuing an urgent warning to anyone with a dog. Please be sure to do the following:

  • Touch the pavement to ensure that it won’t burn dogs’ foot pads.
  • Be alert to a long, curled-up tongue and heavy panting, as dogs cannot sweat as humans can and heat builds up inside their bodies.
  • Walk only in the shade or on earth or grass, and never leave animals outdoors in extreme heat or inside vehicles.

This May, PETA fieldworkers discovered the body of a dog who had died after being left chained up in the hot sun, and similar reports nationwide are starting to roll in. Recently, a law-enforcement officer mistakenly left his patrol car with a dog inside it, and the K-9 succumbed to heat prostration and died. Last year, more than 31 dogs were reported dead from heat-related causes. (Figures are far likely higher, as most heat-related deaths go unreported.)

PETA also urges everyone to support the Hot Cars Act of 2021, which would require automakers to install technology in vehicles to detect the presence of a child or an animal and alert drivers when someone is in the backseat.

Anyone who leaves animals outside to suffer in severe weather may be prosecuted for cruelty.

Linda McCartney’s Favorite Vegan Recipes Revealed in New Cookbook

Longtime PETA supporter Paul McCartney and his daughters Mary and Stella have released a new cookbook full of vibrant vegan recipes inspired by the late Linda McCartney. Filled with intimate family stories and photos, Linda McCartney’s Family Kitchen: Over 90 Plant-Based Recipes to Save the Planet and Nourish the Soul is not only a cookbook but also a remembrance of her life.

Linda was an animal rights trailblazer and devoted PETA supporter who never missed an opportunity to promote compassion for all sentient beings. Her legacy lives on through her family and the countless others who have been inspired by her passion for animals, including actor and PETA collaborator Alicia Silverstone. Linda McCartney’s Family Kitchen—filled with recipes that are as good for the soul as they are for animals and the planet—will inspire you to make kinder choices, too.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the delicious vegan recipes included in the book:

French Toast

There’s no need to harm chickens and steal their eggs to make this sweet breakfast classic. Chickpea flour is used to thicken the batter that gives this toast its cinnamon-speckled crust, although you can also use all-purpose flour.

From the book: “Quick and easy, French toast was a favourite treat when we were children and we still love it today. Linda used the irresistible flavours of cinnamon, vanilla and maple syrup in her recipe and, when topped with fruit for a burst of juiciness, this makes a really luxurious special breakfast. It’s the perfect way to use up slightly stale bread.”

Gingerbread Cake

Vegan butter and flaxseeds are used instead of butter and eggs to make this recipe animal-friendly. Have it for breakfast with maple syrup and vegan yogurt, or try it with dairy-free ice cream for dessert.

From the book: “Gingerbread is a much-loved classic bake and this dairy-free version is wonderfully squidgy, sticky and satisfying. This is great just as it is or, when served with some plant-based vanilla ice cream, it makes a delightful dessert.”

Deep Dish Pie

Linda’s take on the savory British pie is made with vegan meatballs and flaky puff pastry.

From the book: “This is a totally gorgeous pie—bring this to the table and everyone will sigh with delight. And as we use ready-made vegan pastry and burgers or meatballs, it is easy to put together. The pastry is widely available but just check the ingredients label to make sure it is vegan. A bowl of green peas is the perfect accompaniment.”

PETA Uncovers Documents Revealing Drowned Mice, Birds Starved in UMass Labs

After obtaining federal reports revealing widespread animal welfare violations in University of Massachusetts–Amherst (UMass) laboratories and internal documents betraying university officials’ unwillingness to modernize its research program, PETA is turning to the school’s Board of Trustees. In a letter sent today, PETA urged the trustees to direct UMass to resume discussions with the group about modernizing its research program and implementing animal-free test methods.

The federal reports, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request to the National Institutes of Health, document violations of federal animal welfare guidelines: Mice have drowned, birds have starved to death, and zebrafishes have died from overheating. In one incident, experimenters failed to give necessary pain relief to several hundred mice who had just undergone surgery. And experimenters neglected to offer treatment for hamsters who were deliberately bred to have early heart failure—leaving some so weak that they couldn’t reach food or water.

“UMass has an appalling track record of animal care, and this further compromises its already shoddy experiments,” says PETA Senior Director Kathy Guillermo. “PETA urges the trustees to step in and compel the administration to modernize—and our scientists stand ready to help.”

PETA has been contacted by numerous UMass alumni and donors concerned about the university’s treatment of primates in its laboratories. (See video footage here.) Yet internal correspondence among school officials obtained by PETA suggests that the university never intended to make any of the improvements recommended by PETA scientists and met only because its donors were concerned

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Novel Goose-Friendly Marketing Push at RH Annual Meeting

“Today’s conscientious consumers won’t rest easy on unethical pillows.” That’s the message RH executives will hear from shareholder PETA tomorrow, as it asks the home furnishing giant at its annual meeting to label pillow inserts clearly so as to inform shoppers that down-free pillows are the right choice for anyone who wants to protect the environment, has a feather allergy, or opposes cruelty to animals. As PETA’s investigations have shown, highly sensitive, social, and family-oriented geese and ducks used in the down industry face intensive confinement (factory farming) before they’re slammed into crates and trucked to slaughterhouses in all weather conditions. Then their throats are cut—often while they’re still conscious.

“Choosing luxurious vegan down shields geese from trauma and slaughter and so benefits everyone,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA will remind RH that feather-free filling is an upgrade from cruelly obtained bird feathers, and its marketing should reflect that.”

PETA’s question also highlights the environmental devastation caused by the down industry: Duck and goose farms are a public health hazard, responsible for multiple outbreaks of avian flu and E. coli infections. In addition, the down industry releases toxic chemicals, massive amounts of antibiotics, and fecal waste onto land and into waterways, harming workers, wildlife, and the environment.

PETA first purchased stock in RH and began calling on it to stop selling down in 2013. The company agreed to stop selling mohair after a PETA video exposé revealed cruelty to goats in the mohair industry.

PETA Says ‘Joe Exotic’ Resentencing No Cause for Concern

A U.S. 10th District Court judge has ordered resentencing for Joseph Maldonado-Passage (aka “Joe Exotic”), but what’s important is that his convictions for two counts of murder for hire and 17 counts of wildlife-related federal crimes have been upheld. Below, please find a statement from PETA Foundation Associate Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Debbie Metzler:

“Joe Exotic” still has many years in prison ahead of him, his convictions for gunning down five endangered tigers and other wildlife crimes stand, and the rest of his Tiger King cohorts are still poised for their own downfalls, so neither PETA nor anyone else who cares about animals has anything to worry about.
