Reward Reaches $7,500 in Dog Zip-Tie Case

PETA is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty charges of the person(s) who fastened a zip tie tightly around a dog’s neck, causing his head to swell to twice its normal size and leaving him with painful injuries around his neck. PETA’s reward is in addition to Crime Stoppers’ offer of a $5,000 reward, bringing the total potential reward up to $7,500.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, a resident reported seeing the blond-and-brown pit bull–cur mix roaming the 16000 block of Blair Avenue on January 8. After a long search, officers were able to retrieve him and remove the zip tie the next day. The dog, now named Bugsy, is believed to be about 3 years old and will be available for adoption once he recovers from his injuries.

Police are investigating this incident, and PETA is asking locals to help spread the word and put up free downloadable posters (available here) in businesses and schools, on bulletin boards, and anywhere else that they’re allowed to display them in the hope that someone will recognize this dog.

“This dog was being strangled by a zip tie that someone put around his neck, and if no one had intervened, he likely would have suffocated or starved to death,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA urges anyone who has information to come forward so that whoever tormented him can be held accountable and stopped from hurting anyone else.”

Tipsters should contact the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office at 352-754-6830 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-990-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted at HernandoCountyCrimeStoppers.com.

PETA Statement on State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s Federal Indictment

Please see PETA Vice President Shalin Gala’s statement regarding the news that State’s Attorney for Baltimore City Marilyn Mosby is facing a federal indictment:

In the wake of federal charges brought against State’s Attorney for Baltimore City Marilyn Mosby—to whom PETA sent a complaint last month urging an investigation and prosecution of the man responsible for invasive brain experiments conducted on captive barn owls at Johns Hopkins University—PETA is appealing to Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to intervene and demand justice for owls subjected to these appallingly crude, worthless, and apparently illegal experiments that nearly half a million people have spoken out against. The experiments appear to violate Maryland’s cruelty-to-animals law and were conducted without the proper state permits.

Free KFC—From PETA?

To mark the historic launch of KFC’s new vegan Beyond Fried Chicken menu item—and because approximately 1,500 chickens are still being killed for their flesh every second—a PETA supporter in a chicken costume will go through the drive-through and then join members of BeAnAnimalHero.org to roost outside a local KFC with 1,500 of tasty vegan nuggets, proving that you can have killer taste without killing. The “bird” will help animal allies distribute the chicken-free nuggets—along with pro-chicken comic books for kids—in a bid to encourage people to keep animals out of slaughterhouses by eating vegan, something that’s easier to do and more delicious than ever.

“Fast-food chains are seeing the writing on the wall, and it’s written in plant-based ink,” says founder of BeAnAnimalHero.org Susan Hargreaves. “Their customers want healthier, kinder choices that are better for the planet, and animal heroes everywhere are cluckin’ ecstatic!”

“It’s no skin off our backs to order the crispy, cruelty-free nuggets now available at KFC instead of meaty ones, but it’s a matter of life or death for chickens,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA hopes this giveaway will inspire diners to opt for the vegan version every time they hit the drive-through.”
