Free KFC Ahead of Super Bowl—From PETA?

As part of PETA’s national “Fight the Bite” campaign—which includes an in-your-face Super Bowl ad—and to mark the historic launch of KFC’s new vegan Beyond Fried Chicken, PETA supporters will be outside a local KFC store tomorrow passing out hundreds of the tasty chick-free nuggets to encourage people to forgo chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday, something that’s easier to do and more delicious than ever.

When:    Saturday, February 12, 1 p.m.

Where:    Outside KFC, 222 Rte. 37 E., Toms River

“It’s no skin off our backs to order the crispy, cruelty-free nuggets now available at KFC instead of meaty ones, but it’s a matter of life and death for chickens,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA asks that everyone kick off their Super Bowl feasts with foods that leave animals in peace.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers a list of ready-to-heat vegan wings available at grocery stores and a guide to eating vegan at chain restaurants.

PETA Statement re Medina Spirit’s Necropsy

Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding the release of necropsy findings on Thoroughbred Medina Spirit, trained by Bob Baffert:

How many Bob Baffert–trained horses will drop dead with no known cause before he is booted out of racing? We urge the California Horse Racing Board to retain blood and urine samples from the horses, as new tests to detect as-yet unknown doping agents are likely to be developed.

Urgent From PETA: Wildfire Survival Tips for Animals in Orange County

Because a brush fire continues to threaten Laguna Beach and evacuations are underway, animals are likely to die if abandoned.

During evacuations, small animals such as cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, and gerbils should be placed securely in carriers (birds should be covered), and dogs should be kept on a secure harness and leash. Take enough food for your animals to last several days. Horses, sheep, cows, llamas, and other animals should never be locked in stalls or otherwise confined, unable to flee the flames. If it’s impossible to remove them, they should be freed to attempt to survive. Anyone who sees animals in danger or distress should assist if possible but, if unable to help, should note their exact locations and alert authorities immediately.

Residents who remain in areas affected by smoke and falling ash should keep animals indoors and avoid all outdoor activities, such as running with dogs.

Animals must never be left behind. Anyone who evacuates and intentionally abandons animals to fend for themselves may be prosecuted.

Remember to make plans to ensure the safety of all animal companions in advance of trouble in order to avoid being caught unprepared:

PETA has released a wildfire-preparedness PSA featuring Dean Winters, and also offers a video about keeping animal companions safe during fires. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

PETA Statement: No Barbaric Animal Killing at Cobra Gold 2022 After Outcry

Please see PETA Vice President Shalin Gala’s statement regarding the news that U.S. Marine and Thai military service members will not kill any animals at the upcoming Cobra Gold 2022:

The barbaric animal killing during the Cobra Gold military exercises in Thailand has been nixed for the second year in a row, a top official has confirmed to PETA. Forcing military troops to kill chickens with their bare hands, skin and eat live geckos, consume live scorpions and tarantulas, and decapitate cobras and drink their blood was cruel, dangerous, and likely illegal.

These atrocities were halted in 2021 after PETA’s release of shocking video footage and our exposé—which included formal complaints to top Marine Corps and Department of Defense officials, a rulemaking petition, a Naval Inspector General complaint, and protests outside the Pentagon, the Royal Thai Embassy, and the home of Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III. PETA thanks the military officials who saw fit to protect their uniform and honor from dangerous Jackass Forever–style antics.
