We Did It! Millennium Hotels Drops Iditarod After Worldwide PETA Campaign

BREAKING: Millennium Hotels and Resorts—one of the Iditarod’s last major sponsors—has confirmed that 2022 is the last year it will sponsor the death race. This huge victory for dogs, who deserve better than being run to death for mushers’ prize money, follows a tenacious PETA campaign that we couldn’t have won without your support.

Millennium Hotels had sponsored the Iditarod for nearly 30 years. But with ads placed from Alaska to New York and protests held from Paris …

… to Manila …

… and with the help of hundreds of thousands of supporters like you, we put the hotel chain on blast. And it worked! Together, we made the Iditarod’s cruelty to dogs impossible to ignore and gave Millennium Hotels no choice but to end its support of the deadly event. We put up bus ads in Anchorage, Alaska, ahead of the race …

… placed print ads in hospitality magazines, erected a billboard near the chain’s New York City Times Square hotel …

… and launched a flyposting campaign with the street artist Praxis:

We held dozens of spirited protests at Millennium hotels worldwide, including in Anchorage …

… and Boulder and Avon, Colorado …

… as well as in Boston; Durham, North Carolina; Los Angeles …

… Minneapolis; Nashville, Tennessee; Scottsdale, Arizona; and New York City.

We took to the Internet to keep the pressure on the chain, too, including by urging our millions of followers to take action for dogs …

… and by holding a week of action: “Let’s make sure Millennium is the next to drop its sponsorship!” we said last year. And because of your help, we got there. Millennium Hotels will soon join the growing list of companies (including ExxonMobil, Chrysler, Alaska Airlines, Coca-Cola, and Jack Daniel’s) that have listened to PETA and the public and stopped supporting a cruel industry in which dogs are chained up, dogs like Snickers, whom a PETA eyewitness observed limping and suffering from chronic, painful arthritis during an exposé …

Snickers, an Iditarod victim

Rather than providing Snickers with the veterinary care and comfort that she desperately needed, former Iditarod champion John Baker chained the elderly dog beside the frozen sea, all alone and unable to escape the Arctic cold.

… and forced to run so far and so fast that their bodies break down, their paws bleed, or they die after inhaling their own vomit.

“Champagne corks are popping around the world at the news that Millennium Hotels and Resorts is checking out of the Iditarod’s cruelty to dogs,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA can now turn its attention to the shrinking number of sponsors that are still willing to bankroll a race that runs dogs to their deaths.”

More than 150 dogs have died during the Iditarod since it began, and that doesn’t include those who died in the off-season or who were killed because they weren’t fast or fit enough to make the grade. Dogs used in the race are forced to pull heavy sleds across approximately 1,000 miles of grueling terrain, through blinding blizzards and subzero temperatures. During the 2021 race alone, nearly 200 dogs were pulled off the trail because of exhaustion, illness, injury, or other causes. However, despite the death toll and a public outcry—and even though ex-sponsors have been running for the hills—CEO Rob Urbach and his colleagues still plan to hold the cruel event in less than a month.

Together, we’ve persuaded Millennium Hotels to stop funding cruelty. With your help, we can make even more of a difference for vulnerable dogs.

Wells Fargo, State Farm, Panasonic, and others have ended their support of the Iditarod after hearing from PETA and you—so let’s put the pressure on GCI, owned by Liberty Media, to follow suit. Click below to urge the internet service provider to do the right thing for dogs:

Update: Millennium Hotels Cuts Iditarod Ties; PETA Protest Now a Party

PETA has just learned that Millennium Hotels and Resorts is ending its nearly 30 years of support of the Iditarod, the notorious dog-sled race in which more than 150 dogs have died—so the group is turning tomorrow’s planned protest at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Chicago into a victory party! PETA and Chicago Alliance for Animals supporters in party hats will pop champagne and rally passersby to give a “round of appaws” for Millennium Hotels, which now joins ExxonMobil—a former major sponsor that paid the race $250,000 a year—as well as Jack Daniel’s, Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, Alaska Airlines, and dozens of other brands in cutting ties with the Iditarod.

“The champagne corks will be popping in the Windy City tomorrow over the news that Millennium Hotels and Resorts is checking out of the Iditarod’s cruelty to dogs,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is celebrating this huge blow to the vile dog-sled industry and will now turn its attention to the shrinking number of sponsors that are still willing to bankroll a race that has run dogs to their deaths.”

Millennium’s decision follows a massive PETA campaign that included appeals from nearly 500,000 PETA supporters, PETA ads on buses in Anchorage during the 2021 Iditarod, “Millhellium” print ads in hospitality magazines in summer 2021, a billboard near Millennium’s New York Times Square hotel in June 2021, and dozens of protests around the world.

Where:           Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Chicago, 163 E. Walton Pl., Chicago

Sweet Victory: Peoria Bakery Wins National ‘Top 10’ Award From PETA

In a nationwide battle royal to see who takes the cake, Riley’s Vegan Sweets and Eats has come out in the top tier. Beating out eateries from across the country, the local favorite clinched a spot on PETA’s list of the Top 10 Vegan Sweet Treats in the U.S. for its Jumbo Cinnamon Rolls. Dished up in a variety of flavors throughout the year, including classic, chocolate, pecan, and pumpkin spice, these tasty hand-rolled treats are perfect for Valentine’s Day—or any day!

Riley’s February menu includes the cinnamon rolls as well as doughnuts, cookies, brownies, and cookie sandwiches—available daily at the bakery’s storefront location and also delivered fresh to the Hy-Vee store in Sheridan Village every Thursday morning.

“With these award-winning cinnamon rolls, Riley’s Vegan Sweets and Eats has rolled a beloved comfort food and kindness to animals into one decadent treat,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “All the eateries on PETA’s list prove that it’s as easy as vegan pie to dish out delicious treats that are also sweet to animals this Valentine’s Day.”

Consumers’ demand for vegan food out of concern for animals, the environment, and their health has sent the vegan food market skyrocketing: It grew two and a half times faster in 2021 than it did between 2018 and 2020, and it’s expected to reach $22 billion by 2025.

Other winners on PETA’s list include HaleLife Bakery with locations in Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Tampa, Florida; Jalen’s Bakery in Fresno, California; and Sprig & Vine in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Each eatery will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers free vegan Valentine’s Day dessert recipes on its website along with a selection of sweet gifts from the PETA Shop.

Suffering Beagles in Virginia Need Everyone’s Help—Spread the Word!

Cumberland, Virginia, is home to a massive factory farm that breeds beagles. Operated by Envigo—Virginia’s largest commercial dog breeder—it warehouses 5,000 beagles at a time and produces 500 puppies per month to sell to experimenters all over the world. A 2021 PETA undercover investigation revealed that dogs and puppies were intensively confined to small, barren kennels and cages 24/7. Our eyewitness found more than 360 puppies dead among their live littermates and mothers.

Beagle puppies at breeding mill for labs

Eight Virginia legislators from both sides of the aisle have introduced bills that, if passed, would help improve animal welfare standards, implement reporting requirements, restrict state funds that can be spent on animals from facilities that have violated the federal Animal Welfare Act, and more. The beagles need concerned Virginians to contact their legislators and urge them to support these bills, which would do the following and more:

  • Prohibit the sale of dogs bred for experimentation in Virginia for experiments not required by federal law or regulation and for experimentation overseas (This industry is shrouded in secrecy, but documentation shows that animals commercially bred in Virginia are sold to laboratories in Japan and Taiwan—both of which have abysmally low standards for animal welfare policy and legislation.)
  • Require that animals at breeding facilities be given a chance to find a loving home (Dogs who have endured such miserable conditions their entire lives should be given a chance to be adopted, loved, and respected.)
  • Close a legal loophole that currently excludes dogs and cats used in experiments from Virginia’s companion animal protection laws (This bill would hold facilities that breed dogs and cats for experimentation to the same standards as animal shelters and commercial breeders that sell them as companion animals.)

Beagles are used for experimentation because they’re small, docile, and forgiving. At Envigo, these gentle dogs are kept caged 24/7 without beds, stimulation, or the opportunity to play or exercise—they don’t even have names, just numbers tattooed on their ears.

An NIH-Supplying Beagle Factory Is Just the Beginning

You can help make sure that this crucial, dog-protecting legislation passes by taking these actions:

  • Share this alert with everyone you know who lives in Virginia. Urge them to speak up for dogs.

    Share With Friends in Virginia

  • No matter where you live, you can follow the progress on the Virginia Coalition for Beagle Protection’s (VCBP) Facebook page.

  • Take action and urge U.S. Department of Agriculture leadership to remove dogs suffering at Envigo immediately and suspend its operating license.

    Take Action

After taking action, please share this alert with others and remind them of the reality of animal testing.

‘Give a Cluck, Shaq!’: Giant ‘Chickens’ to Appeal to Athlete Turned Restauranteur

The chickens have a bone to pick, and they’ve now entered the “chicken wars” with stops at Shaquille O’Neal’s Big Chicken restaurants in Glendale, California, on Tuesday, and Las Vegas, Nevada, on Thursday, where they’ll be passing out free vegan KFC in a push to get the former basketball superstar to introduce vegan chicken at his eateries. He’d be joining Pinky Cole, Jermaine Dupri, Chris Paul, Colin Kaepernick, John Salley, and so many others in helping people be healthy, humane, and environmentally conscious. PETA has also written to the “Big Diesel,” pointing out that, as a Beyond Meat investor himself, he already knows that vegan chicken is the future, the future is now, and eating vegan gives athletes and others more stamina, in addition to preventing birds from being reduced to Super Bowl “snacks.”

“Until he introduces a vegan option, there’s a Shaq-sized gap on the Big Chicken menu,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “With PETA’s ‘Fight the Bite’ campaign, we hope to sign up customers to the birds’ side of the ‘chicken wars’ and let them keep their wings.”

The giveaways are part of PETA’s “Fight the Bite” campaign—a national effort aimed at slashing the estimated 1 billion chicken wings consumed during the Super Bowl last year. Actions include running an edgy Super Bowl video spot in Las Vegas—because it’s the hometown of Shaq’s Big Chicken—during sports programs the night before the Super Bowl and on NBC and Telemundo during pre-game programming on game day. The 30-second spot uses “security cam” footage to show what happens to diners in various places, from couches to carryouts, when chicken dinners suddenly become living, squawking birds with a bone to pick about being fried for food.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers free vegan starter kits as well as a list of ready-to-heat plant-based wings available at grocery stores and many other easy vegan game day recipes.
