PETA Statement re Another Baffert Horse Death

Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding the death of the 2-year-old colt Rapacious today at Los Alamitos Race Course:

Bob Baffert’s name has become synonymous with scandal and carnage. He has just returned to racing, and a horse’s body is already being hauled away. Rapacious was just 2 years old and hadn’t even raced yet, but we can expect Baffert’s usual set of excuses. California officials must seek and accept nothing less than the entire truth, and they must release it publicly. They might also try to explain how someone whose career is littered with so many dead horses is still allowed to set foot on a racetrack.

PETA Statement: Kendrick Perkins Is a Big-League Animal Exploiter

Below, please find a statement from PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch in response to Kendrick Perkins’ French bulldog–breeding operation:

While the world is waking up to the suffering that flat-faced breathing-impaired breeds endure, gasping and panting, their airways too abnormally tiny to cope with their needs—one recent study even concluded that they no longer can be classified as ‘normal dogs’—Kendrick Perkins is churning out more of these deformed dogs, simply to turn a buck. As millions of dogs stare homelessness in the face right now, PETA is urging Perkins to find his moral compass and get out of the breeding business that robs dogs in shelters of a chance to find a home and produces wheezing ‘designer’ dogs.

Only an estimated 10% of the approximately 70 million dogs and cats who are homeless in the U.S. at any given time end up in animal shelters. The rest are turned out onto the street or into the woods or desert. Breeders contribute to this crisis, and many “purebred” dogs—created by people like Perkins—face painful and life-threatening congenital breed-specific defects. A recent court ruling in Norway established a precedent for the recognition that flat-faced breeds suffer severely and should no longer be bred.

Historic! Head of Pakistani Prime Minister’s Strategic Reforms Unit Meets With PETA

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk and other representatives of the group recently met with Salman Sufi (head of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Strategic Reforms Unit) to discuss potential groundbreaking reforms that would seismically shift how animals are treated in his country.

Alongside Newkirk were other PETA staff, including Vice President of International Laboratory Methods Shalin Gala and Chief of Science Advancement and Outreach Dr. Katherine Roe, and they discussed several potential areas of collaboration, including the following:

  • Helping universities throughout Pakistan switch to using superior, ethical, economical, non-animal simulation models for veterinary education in order to replace the cruel kidnapping and killing of dogs and other animals for training
  • Implementing an education program to help children and adults better understand how to share the world with and care for animals
  • Assisting with repatriation efforts for non-native species of animals who’ve been cruelly trafficked into Pakistan to be kept as household pets or whose skins or other body parts would be used as decorations

The meeting followed PETA’s recent calls for Pakistani officials to ban horrific veterinary training exercises on abducted dogs. Shortly afterward, Sufi announced Sharif’s landmark measures prohibiting the use of live animals in such training in Islamabad and surrounding regions.

“From trafficked wildlife to kidnapped dogs in veterinary laboratories, animals across Pakistan will benefit as a result of this historic meeting,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA is pleased to be working with a visionary leader like Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the head of his reforms unit, Salman Sufi, and we look forward to a long and productive collaboration that will benefit animals, advance human health, and boost Pakistan’s status on the world stage.”

PETA will next send information to Sufi for Sharif’s consideration in implementing other reforms—including replacing the use of animals in medical training, classroom dissection exercises, and biomedical research with superior, state-of-the-art methods as well as setting up a national non-animal research methods database and working to implement PETA’s Research Modernization Deal.

Key Alzheimer’s Research May Have Relied on Falsified Data: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA neuroscientist Dr. Katherine Roe regarding the apparent fabrication of Alzheimer’s research data as investigated by Science.

This is a devastating loss for humans who need viable treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and for the millions of animals who suffered because someone cared more about accolades than good science. Unfortunately, it’s just one of thousands of examples demonstrating the tendency of animal experimenters to overstate the value of their research and of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) almost complete lack of scrutiny concerning how it spends taxpayer dollars. In this case, it seems that experimenters using mice and rats have misled the entire Alzheimer’s research community, wasting hundreds of millions of dollars in public funding of efforts to cure a disease that kills more than a million humans each year. This situation comes as no surprise to PETA, which has spent decades exposing experimenters’ lies and NIH’s refusal to take action. The entire system must be overhauled, and again, we urge NIH to accept PETA’s Research Modernization Deal.
