PETA Praises President Biden’s New Executive Order Backing Cell-Based Meat

PETA is thanking President Joe Biden for signing a new executive order launching the National Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Initiative, which will, among other things, encourage development and innovation in the cell-based (or “clean”) meat industry.

This initiative will help create a more progressive, forward-thinking society and represents a path forward for protecting animals and human health.

Moving away from foods that require the mass breeding and killing of animals will spare countless cows, pigs, chickens, and others a miserable existence on crowded, filthy factory farms and a terrifying trip to the slaughterhouse. It will also reduce people’s risk of developing some of America’s top killers, including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease—as well as lower the associated healthcare costs.

PETA has long been a supporter of using cell cultures to replace the use of animals for food, most notably in 2008, when we offered a $1 million prize for the first commercially viable in vitro chicken. That incentive sparked debate that generated interest and investments from the food industry.

We look forward to the availability of more funding for plant-based agriculture and hunger-relief programs that include healthy vegan foods.

The Climate Catastrophe Is Already Here—Don’t Wait to Make a Difference

We can’t wait for cell-based meats to become widely available to do our part to alleviate the worst effects of climate change. The single best action you can take—for animals, the environment, and your own health—is to go vegan today. PETA will even help you do it.

Lucy, I’m Home! (That’s Just What This Adoptable Rottie Wants to Hear)

Lucy the Rottweiler had what every dog deserves—a comfortable home with a human who loved and respected her. But when her adoring guardian found himself suffering from serious health issues, he knew he could no longer give her the care she needed, so he turned to PETA for help finding her a new home.

Five-year-old Lucy was understandably nervous and confused when she arrived at PETA’s Norfolk, Virginia, shelter. Knowing how desperately she must have been missing her beloved former guardian, staffers set to work helping this gentle giant come out of her shell. Gradually, she relaxed enough to reveal her true personality—and it’s larger than life.

Turns out, this lady is as fun-loving as everyone’s other favorite Lucy. She’s a snuggle bug with a stellar sense of humor whose typical antics involve grabbing a toy and romping around like a pony—and at about 120 pounds, she’s about the size of one! A sucker for tummy rubs, she also enjoys going for long walks anywhere she can sniff and roll around to her heart’s content.

You know that “Live, Laugh, Love” decal plastered on your dining room wall since 2009? Lucy won’t judge you for it—in fact, you might have a new basic bestie, because that’s her life motto! (That “Hang in There” cat poster in your office, on the other hand, has got to go.)

Speaking of cats, Lucy has lived with them and should be agreeable to a feline family member as long as proper introductions are made. She hasn’t spent much time around other dogs but is very curious about them, so a home with a calm, friendly canine sibling might be in her future. Lucy’s adopter will need to have experience with dogs—ideally Rottweilers like her—and provide her with a quiet, adults-only life as she was accustomed to as her former guardian’s right-hand gal. She’ll politely pass on busy households with small children.

‘Hell on Wheels’ Is Coming to Lexington: Squawking Chicken Truck to Ruffle Feathers Downtown

Local diners just might think twice about chowing down on fried chicken after they see—and hear—“Hell on Wheels,” PETA’s new guerilla-marketing campaign featuring a life-size chicken transport truck covered with images of real chickens crammed into crates on their way to a slaughterhouse, complete with actual recorded sounds of the birds’ cries and a subliminal message every 10 seconds suggesting that people go vegan. The truck will head to the University of Kentucky’s Chick-fil-A location and the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment—and will drive around the Locust Trace AgriScience Center, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, and Lafayette High School on Monday as part of the group’s national tour.

“Behind every bucket of fried chicken or barbecued wing is a once-living, sensitive individual who was crammed onto a truck for a terrifying, miserable journey to their death,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s ‘Hell on Wheels’ truck is an appeal to anyone who eats chicken to remember that the meat industry is cruel to birds and that the kindest meal is a vegan one.”

Birds killed for their flesh are bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight, and the sheds to which they’re confined are so filthy that the red, watery goo in packages of chicken is referred to as “fecal soup.” They’re trucked through all weather extremes, sometimes over hundreds of miles and without any food or water, to slaughterhouses, where their throats are slit—often while they’re still conscious.

Upcoming stops on the “Hell on Wheels” tour include staking out chicken restaurants in Charleston, West Virginia, as well as Greensboro, Raleigh, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

PETA Calls For a Strike on Sex With Meat-Eating Men

We all know them—the suburban men with beer bottles in hand, brandishing tongs while cooking sausages on their expensive gas grills. These barbecue masters believe that they can prove their masculinity to themselves and their fellow humans through their consumption of meat, not only hurting animals but also harming the planet.

The science speaks for itself: A study published in the journal PLOS ONE found that men contribute significantly more to the climate catastrophe than women, primarily through their meat consumption. Their eating habits result in 41% more greenhouse gases.

That’s why PETA’s proposing a strike on sex with meat-eating men to persuade them to go vegan.

Men need to take accountability for their actions. Now that research shows that their impact on the climate is so disproportionately large, they should take steps to rectify that. And the easiest, healthiest, simplest way to do this is by going vegan.

For all fathers who still are grilling meat but want their children to have a healthy future on a habitable planet, it’s time for a lifestyle change. Pledge to go vegan today, and order a free vegan starter kit to get you on your way:
