Mickey and Minnie Mouse … Drowning? Iconic Disney Mice Are Reimagined to Help Real Animals

On the 94th anniversary (November 18) of their first appearance on screen, iconic Disney characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse are being reimagined, courtesy of PETA Senior Social Media Artist Tiani Hernandez, who has created a satirical new image (available here) as part of PETA’s campaign to persuade pharmaceutical companies and universities to ban the notorious forced swim test.

Reflective of the suffering of real mice and rats used in forced swim tests, the image depicts a panicked Mickey saying, “Oh gosh Minnie, this sure isn’t swell!” and a desperate Minnie calling, “Help, Mickey! I’m drowning!”

Hernandez’s illustration evokes real life, not fantasy. In the widely debunked test, experimenters induce panic in vulnerable small animals, such as mice and rats, who may be dosed with a test substance before they’re dropped into inescapable cylinders of water and made to swim, terrified that they’ll drown. They attempt to climb the steep sides of the containers and even dive underwater to look for an escape. The test is done under the erroneous assumption that it can reveal something about mental health conditions in humans. Once it’s complete, experimenters typically kill the animals, either by gassing, an overdose of an anesthetic, or breaking their necks.

“Anyone disturbed by the thought of beloved Disney animals suffering in near-drowning tests should spare a thought for the intelligent, sensitive mice and rats who suffer in these cruel experiments in real life,” says PETA neuroscientist Dr. Emily Trunnell. “PETA is calling on institutions around the world to drop the forced swim test and adopt modern research methods that leave animals in peace and have a far better chance of helping humans.”

Following discussions with PETA entities, 15 companies, including Bayer and Johnson & Johnson, and several universities (some of which previously performed the test for depression research) have declared that they don’t intend to use it in the future. PETA is calling on Eli Lilly and Sanofi to follow suit.

‘Cruelty Doesn’t Fly’: PETA Supporters to Blast Secretive Monkey Shipments Flown Into IAH

“Cruelty Doesn’t Fly.” That’s the message PETA supporters will bring to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) amid Thanksgiving crowds on Tuesday, following reports that a shipment of 360 long-tailed macaques arrived in Houston from Cambodia in September aboard a flight by AELF FlightService and its sister company, Maleth Aero. This week, the U.S. Department of Justice issued indictments of multiple individuals allegedly involved in a monkey-laundering and -smuggling ring that supplied U.S. laboratories with long-tailed macaques captured in their forest homes in Cambodia and falsely identified as captive-born.

When:    Tuesday, November 22, 11:45 a.m.

Where:    George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Terminal E, 2800 N. Terminal Rd., Houston

The flight was among the airlines’ other reported primate shipments into the country—posing a grave, potentially fatal public health risk and causing immense suffering to the animals, who are packed into small wooden crates and locked inside cargo holds before being mutilated and psychologically tormented in experiments.

“AELF FlightService booked long-tailed macaques a one-way ticket to a gruesome death in terrifying laboratories,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “These monkeys have just been classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and PETA is urging AELF FlightService to join other airline industry leaders in banning the shipment of laboratory-bound primates.”

United Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Delta Air Lines are among the many major companies that have confirmed to PETA that they don’t fly monkeys or other primates destined for laboratories or laboratory suppliers.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.

ThanksVegan! PETA to Hand Out Dozens of Turkey-Free Roasts in Norfolk, Virginia

Vegan turkey roasts are coming to roost in Norfolk, courtesy of PETA supporters who will gather outside the Aldi store in Ghent on Saturday and give away free Trader Joe’s Turkey-Less Stuffed Roasts to encourage people to keep intelligent, inquisitive, and sensitive birds off the table and celebrate “ThanksVegan” instead.

When:    Saturday, November 19, 11 a.m.–12 noon

Where:    Aldi, 730 W. 21st St., Norfolk

“Turkeys are gentle individuals who love their families, feel pain and fear, and want to live as much as humans do,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is encouraging everyone to see the similarities between all sentient beings, eat vegan, and spare turkeys, about 45 million of whom are slaughtered every year for Thanksgiving alone.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers ThanksVegan recipes on its website.
