Local Pet Store Hit With Cease and Desist Over Deceptive Advertising and Puppy Mill Ties

Today, PETA fired off a letter to Family Pet Center (FPC) owner Corine Cowan, demanding that the store remove deceptive claims on its website that it does not source dogs from puppy mills and that the puppies “are bred in the best conditions possible,” noting that FPC does sell dogs from puppy mills, including BJ’s and Guys, a Kansas-based breeding operation with nearly 1,000 dogs onsite and a history of federal Animal Welfare Act violations. The group’s letter gives the Greenbrier Mall store until December 30 to comply—or PETA will be compelled to seek enforcement action by appropriate authorities under Virginia’s false advertising law.

PETA points out that dogs at BJ’s and Guys have been found housed outdoors with no bedding in winter and left in extreme heat without adequate air conditioning in summer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has also documented that dogs were left to suffer with untreated injuries and ailments at the puppy mill.

PETA also notes that FPC’s misleading claims may lead consumers to unknowingly purchase puppies who may have severe health issues. As the Virginia General Assembly unanimously agreed in its 2020 resolution to make December Puppy Mill Awareness Month, “[D]ogs from puppy mills are often underdeveloped, sick, or suffer from genetic deformities or behavioral defects as a result of poor socialization and mistreatment, and some may even die only days or weeks after purchase.”

“Family Pet Center is trying to dupe customers into believing that these dogs weren’t sourced from seedy mills that stockpile puppies,” says PETA Foundation General Counsel for Animal Law Jared Goodman. “PETA is giving this shady shop two weeks to drop the lies and is calling on everyone to adopt from animal shelters.”

In November, a PETA investigator visited 16 of Virginia’s 18 pet stores that sell puppies and found that most—including FPC—violated state law by either failing to display a sign stating that the USDA inspection reports on the breeders whose puppies they sell are available to customers prior to purchase or outright refusing to show prospective buyers the dogs’ records. There were 11,130 dogs on site just at the USDA-licensed puppy mills that supply the 16 stores. Meanwhile, Virginia’s shelters—like others nationwide—struggle with a homeless-animal overpopulation crisis that’s taxing resources. More information about PETA’s investigation is available here.

VIDEO: PETA Supporters Confront UMass President at Alumni Pre-Game Event

A PETA supporter was thrown to the ground at a University of Massachusetts–Amherst (UMass) alumni pre-game reception earlier today at Heritage at Sportsman’s Park ahead of the Arizona Cardinals vs. New England Patriots game, after confronting UMass President Marty Meehan about the school’s horrific menopause experiments on marmosets.

Video footage is available here.

Animal defenders alerted alumni that UMass experimenters zip-tie frightened marmosets into restraining devices, drill into their skulls, cut open their necks to expose muscle, and thread electrode leads from the scalp and neck to the abdomen.

Experimenters cut out the ovaries of marmosets and heat the animals with hand warmers—the kind used in mittens—in a crude simulation of hot flashes. Marmosets don’t experience menopause. In these and other cruel tests, social monkeys are kept in solitary confinement—like Anakin, a marmoset who was used and eventually killed by UMass experimenters.

“UMass alumni need to know that their alma mater is tormenting defenseless monkeys in disgusting experiments,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA is urging UMass to shut down this seedy laboratory and shift to modern, animal-free research methods.”

PETA has been contacted by numerous UMass alumni and donors concerned about the school’s animal welfare violations. The university has been cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for severely burning an animal on a heating pad as he was recovering from surgery, failing to inform an attending veterinarian about sick animals, and permitting a monkey to escape, then injuring the animal’s tail during recapture.

Trophy Hunter Who Posed With Dead Animal Later Killed Wife

A trophy hunter is facing the death penalty after a jury found him guilty of murdering his wife while the pair were on a 2016 hunting trip in Zambia. The man, a dentist from Pennsylvania, and his slain wife were reportedly in Africa hoping to kill a leopard when the murder occurred. Previously, the trophy hunter had shared a photo online in which he posed with the corpse of a ram he had shot and killed.

Those Who Harm Animals Often Go On to Harm Humans

The FBI has identified cruelty to animals as a warning sign of more violence to come. Psychology Today reported that 70% of criminals in a prison who had a history of being the most violent to humans also had a history of animal abuse, and other studies have found that 43% of school shooters have a history of abusing animals.

PETA also keeps an updated list of reported incidents in which young people have committed acts of cruelty to animals. It’s meant to illustrate how prevalent the problem is and provide educators with tools to teach students what it means to have compassion for all living, feeling beings, and it can be shared with your local school district and community members.

Please urge UPS to ban the shipping of hunting trophies.

By allowing hunters to ship decapitated heads and other body parts home as “trophies,” UPS is supporting the slaughter of magnificent animals. The company proved that it can do better when it banned the transport of not only shark fins and certain live animals but also ivory—and if it can ban shipments of an animal’s tusks, it can surely do the same for the head and other body parts.
