Kilauea bursts back with 9-hour fountaining; Mayon and Semeru send pyroclastic flows

Short-lived but vigorous activity at Hawaii’s Kilauea headlined a busy day of eruptions and unrest. Pyroclastic flows were reported at Mayon in the Philippines and Semeru in Indonesia, while Guatemala’s Fuego and the Santa Maria complex spread ash to nearby communities. Compared to yesterday, Kilauea shifted from a pause to low-level eruptive activity with ash before alerts returned to Advisory/Yellow.

United States
Great Sitkin (Watch / Aviation ORANGE) kept slowly extruding lava in the summit crater, with rockfalls and weak thermal signals. Kilauea (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW) produced Episode 46 at the summit: low-level dome fountaining to 150–200 m for about 9 hours, widespread overflows across roughly half the caldera floor, and an ash plume to ~4.8 km with localized ashfall downwind. Unrest persisted at Shishaldin (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW) with vapor plumes, SO2, and thermal anomalies. Monitoring at Aniakchak (Normal / Aviation GREEN) was restored as power returned to regional telemetry.

Indonesia
Semeru produced 81 explosions with ash to 900 m and a nighttime pyroclastic flow. At Merapi, numerous hot rockfalls descended up to 2 km while low gas plumes rose to 100 m. Ibu tallied 129 explosions with plumes to 600 m; Dukono also generated frequent blasts with plumes to 700 m. Lower-level activity and unrest were noted at several others, including Lewotolok, Lewotobi, Karangetang, Kerinci, and Krakatau.

Philippines
Mayon maintained lava effusion on three flanks; a series of flow-front collapses sent pyroclastic density currents up to 3 km down the Mi-isi Gully, with minor Strombolian bursts. At Kanlaon, seven ash events reached 800 m amid tremor and elevated gas output. Low-level unrest persisted at Taal and Bulusan.

Mexico
Popocatepetl released ash, gas, and steam under Yellow Alert – Phase 2.

South America
In Ecuador, Reventador registered 96 explosions with ash up to 1.5 km and incandescent rockfalls, while Sangay produced frequent explosive activity with thermal anomalies. Peru’s Sabancaya emitted ash-gas plumes to about 400 m alongside a handful of internal quakes.

Other
Guatemala’s Fuego pulsed up to 10 times per hour, lofting ash to nearly 1 km with ashfall, and the Santa Maria complex generated pyroclastic flows and ashfall in nearby towns. Costa Rica’s Poas, Rincon de la Vieja, and Turrialba remained at Level 2 Warning, while Pacaya showed fumarolic activity.
