Crater 1 and its lava dome generates glowing hot rock falls (image: PVMBG)
A new extrusive phase at the volcano started within the past hours, at best a few days ago.
Another batch of viscous magma started to rise into the southern summit Crater 1 lava dome, which has been oozing out of it, resulting in glowing dome-block avalanches. Block-and-ash flows have traveled over the south-southwestern slopes today, most of which reach the base of the dome area.
The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin reported ash emissions, which reached 8,000 ft (2,400 m) altitude and drifted SW.
