A stronger-than-usual eruption took place from the vent in the Central-South crater area at 11:03 local time yesterday, sending lapilli and lava bombs to the upper Sciara del Fuoco, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Catania reported.

The explosion was of greater intensity than ordinary strombolian activity. The second, weaker eruption followed the first one after almost 60 seconds.

Tremor showed a very-high significant amplitude variation, but later on decreased again to low-medium values.

Such events are nothing unusual on the volcano and occur from time to time, but rarely more frequently than every few months or so. Whether this recent increase is a coincidence or hinting at a more pronounced change in activity level or type is currently unknown.
