Stromboli (Eolian Islands, Italy): A series of stronger-than-usual explosions occurred this afternoon at the volcano. The first and likely strongest one was heard and seen from the village at 16:45 local time.
According to our friends on the island, there was a loud booming noise and a tall ash plume that rose several hundred meters above the summit of the island. The eruptive phase consisted of 3 distinct explosions following each other at short intervals.

A new fissure vent opened at the volcano that started to produce a new small lava flow at about 19:45 this evening as reported by the INGV local observatory.
The new lava flow is currently descending to the base of the northern flank of the Southeast crater.

Awu (Sulawesi & Sangihe Islands): (13 May) The Volcanic Alert Level of the volcano was raised from Level 2 (valid from 12 December 2021) to Level 3, as an increase of volcanic earthquakes has been registered over the past three days.
Quakes started to be more frequent on 9 May, of which 88 have been located at shallow levels. Earthquakes have continued to pick up in numbers and became shallower on the next day as the seismic network detected 90 shallow quakes which may indicate elevated fluid movements of gas, water and possibly magma under the surface fracturing the rock.
