Stromboli (Eolian Islands, Italy): A series of stronger-than-usual explosions occurred this afternoon at the volcano. The first and likely strongest one was heard and seen from the village at 16:45 local time.
According to our friends on the island, there was a loud booming noise and a tall ash plume that rose several hundred meters above the summit of the island. The eruptive phase consisted of 3 distinct explosions following each other at short intervals.

Seismic and deformation monitoring data show a strong, but short peak of tremor and a sudden change in ground deformation. The latter indicates a change in slope angle, or brief bulging, likely caused by a large, pressurized bubble of gas in the magma-filled conduit that had been rising to the vent and caused the explosion.

Strombolian activity continues to take place from three of the North crater area’s vents and two vents in the Central-South crater area.

Eruptions from N1 and N2 vents within the North crater occur at regular intervals of 3 to 6 per hour sending lapilli and lava bombs to an approx. height of 80-150 meters to the upper Sciara del Fuoco. The N2 vent occasionally generates a weak spattering.
Low-level explosions at the S2 vent within the Central-South crater occur at regular intervals of 1 to 5 per hour ejecting pyroclastic material less than 80 meters above the crater.

Etna (Sicily, Italy): (13 May) Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Toulouse (VAAC) issued the following report: ERUPTION AT 20220512/1730Z LAVA FLOW OBSERVED AT THE SUMMIT

A new fissure vent opened at the volcano that started to produce a new small lava flow at about 19:45 this evening as reported by the INGV local observatory.
The new lava flow is currently descending to the base of the northern flank of the Southeast crater.

The opening of the vent was accompanied by ash emissions from the Southeast crater at around 19:00 local time today generating an ash column to 3,5 km height towards the SW direction.
Prior to the eruption, the volcanic tremor started to evolve at about 22:00 local time yesterday to medium-high levels. It remains at high values for now at altitude of about 3000 m, suggesting continuing effusion of magma.

Karymsky (Kamchatka): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Tokyo warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 11000 ft (3400 m) altitude or flight level 110 and is moving at 15 kts in N direction.

Manam (Papua New Guinea): (13 May) Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 12000 ft (3700 m) altitude or flight level 120 and is moving at 05 kts in SW direction.

Awu (Sulawesi & Sangihe Islands): (13 May) The Volcanic Alert Level of the volcano was raised from Level 2 (valid from 12 December 2021) to Level 3, as an increase of volcanic earthquakes has been registered over the past three days.
Quakes started to be more frequent on 9 May, of which 88 have been located at shallow levels. Earthquakes have continued to pick up in numbers and became shallower on the next day as the seismic network detected 90 shallow quakes which may indicate elevated fluid movements of gas, water and possibly magma under the surface fracturing the rock.

On 11 May at 15:00 local time, emissions of gas and steam were observed rising about 30 meters above the crater.
The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs, pyroclastic flows and/or likelihood of significant phreatic eruption could affect an area of about 3,5 km distance from the crater.

Semisopochnoi (United States, Aleutian Islands): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Anchorage warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 5000 ft (1500 m) altitude or flight level 050 .

Fuego (Guatemala): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 15000 ft (4600 m) altitude or flight level 150 .
