Glowing material slid down the flanks of Reventador volcano (image: IGEPN)
No significant change in activity has occurred during the past weeks. The effusive-explosive eruption of the volcano continues. The explosive activity continues from the active crater with near-constant ash emissions that reached 14,300 ft-14,900 ft (4,360 m-4,560 m) altitude and drifted into W direction.
Incandescent blocks slid down along the flanks and caused avalanches of material. The lava flow on the northeast flank remains active.

The explosive eruption of the volcano has remained essentially unchanged at moderate to high levels. No significant change in activity has occurred since the last update. Ongoing moderate-to-strong strombolian-to-vulcanian activity continues from the summit crater at regular intervals of 9 to 12 per hour showering the summit cone with glowing lava bombs. Incandescent material is being ejected to an approximate height of several hundred meters above the crater and caused moderate to strong avalanches of material as can be seen in the attached video. Plume of ash rose to an estimated altitude of 4,700 ft (15,420 m) and extending about 15-20 km to the NW of the volcano.

Sarychev Peak (Central Kuriles): Activity of the volcano continues at elevated levels. KVERT reported that on 10 January at 15:17 UTC KVERT a difference between thermal anomaly and background temperature was 79,8 °C identified in VolSatView satellite data likely caused by a new batch of magma that could be rising inside the volcano’s conduits towards the crater. … [read more] … [show less] Formation of lava flows in the summit crater in the near future is a possibility if activity at the volcano increases further. The last explosive eruptions at the volcano occurred on 12, 14 and 18 September 2018.
Ruapehu (North Island): The activity of the volcano continues at fluctuating levels during the past few months and currently continues at low levels. GeoNet reported that gas emissions have declined to normal levels on 30 Dec last year. … [read more] … [show less] On 29 Dec a volcanic tremor has decreased and remains at low levels. Chemical analysis of water collected from Crater Lake (Te Wai ā-moe) on 31 Dec showed small changes in key parameters since previous observations a few weeks earlier on 2 Dec.
Kilauea (Hawai’i): (11 Jan) The effusive eruption of the volcano continues. The west vent continues to feed the growing lava lake that remains active and hasn’t shown big variations over the past days. According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), a few floating islands formed in the lava lake. The largest island is about 250 m (820 ft) long, 135 m (440 ft) wide and 20 m (65 ft) tall. On 1 January the islands’ edges were about 6 m (20 ft) above the lava lake surface. On 4 Janury the whole island had risen by about 2 m (6-7 ft). The island has rotated and moved both eastward and westward since its formation on the first day of the eruption. On 6 January at about 22:30 local time the island stalled in rotation and movement. … [read more] … [show less] Webcam imagery and eyewitness observations indicate that it formed through a combination of lava interacting with the lake water, early lava flows, and tephra erupted from the early highest fountains. Islands have been observed in Kīlauea lava lakes for more than 100 years. The apparent buoyancy changes of the island may be due to a density increase in the lava lake as gases escape or sloughing off of island material from the subsurface.
