Media freedom remains under threat in several countries in southern Africa with journalists put in jail for simply doing their job, Amnesty International said today as it took stock on World Press Freedom Day.
During a meeting with President Adama Barrow in the capital Banjul today, Amnesty International delegates noted the major progress made in the two years since his inauguration but drew attention to serious human rights violations in Gambia which still need to be addressed urgently.
South Sudanese authorities should promptly undertake an independent and effective investigation into the apparent extrajudicial execution of two outspoken critics of the government, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said today.
