Ibu volcano (Halmahera, Indonesia): alert status raised to Level III, eruption built up 4 km ash column last night

Huge ash column from Ibu volcano last night reached up to 5,300 m altitude (image: PVMBG)

Due to the heightened activity over the past month, the PVMBG raised the volcano’s alert level from Level II (WASPADA) to Level III (ALERT) on 8 May.
The volcano’s explosions produce above-average sizes, and eruption column heights range between 1500 and 2000 meters, generating copious grey ash emissions. In addition, strong incandescence, mainly visible at night, accompanies explosions, indicating a rise of fresh magma within the volcano’s feeder pipe.

In level III (ALERT), people are advised to avoid the area within a radius of 3 km and 5 km from the crater.

Last night at about 00:24 local time, a spectacular towering ash plume was seen rising from the cinder cone. The eruption generated ash emissions that rose 13,123 ft (4,000 m) above the summit and dissipated towards the north-northwest.

URGENT: Tell Nigerian Officials to Take Action Against Animal Torturer!

Note: There are NO graphic visuals in this alert.

PETA has received disturbing reports of yet another sadistic individual in Nigeria styling himself as a “native doctor” and posting videos of himself torturing and killing animals on Facebook and TikTok using the profile name “Oba Ogun.” Some videos show the man cutting, beheading, and boiling live animals—including a newborn puppy and some kittens—while others show animals bound and helpless or writhing in pain. He appears to be operating in the state of Lagos or Ogun in Nigeria, and he includes a WhatsApp number, presumably so he can solicit requests and money for his gruesome “services.” We’ve removed links to the videos to avoid driving traffic to these accounts and incentivizing further cruelty, but an e-mail we sent to Nigerian officials can be seen here for those interested in further information.

Section 495 of Nigeria’s Criminal Code Act prohibits torturing animals and causing them unnecessary suffering. Section 450 prohibits the unlawful wounding and killing of animals. The actions in these videos appear to violate both. PETA immediately alerted Nigerian officials, but we’ve yet to receive a response—and without immediate action, animals will surely continue to suffer!
