The glowing lava lake within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor (image: HVO)
The effusive activity within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor ceased at 12:03 PM last night, marking the conclusion of the 16th eruption.
The activity in the southern vent was dominated by tall lava fountains reaching 180-210 meters in height.
The effusive period lasted over 37 hours with the last 25 hours and 39 minutes consisting of fountains from the south vent. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory added: „During episode 16, lava flows covered over 50% of the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu within the southern part of Kaluapele (Kīlauea caldera). Weak winds also resulted in deposition of Pele’s hair and tephra in closed areas of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and on Highway 11 between mile marker 35 and 37 on April 1.“
Svartsengi (Reykjanes peninsula, SW Iceland): (2 Apr) Judging from webcams, the eruption site seems to show any signs of the activity within the craters. A faint glow is being visible in the fissure and the lava flow field. … [read more] … [show less] However, the seismic activity and ground deformation are still present due to magma intrusions in the dike. The seismic instrument detected the main distribution of earthquakes about 20 km to the south of the southern tip of the eruptive fissure. The Icelandic Met Office added: „The seismic activity is still at considerable depth and there is no sign that the magma that is moving is seeking the surface. According to model calculations this afternoon, it was estimated that about 15 million cubic meters of magma had flowed from Svartsengi into the magma tunnel under the Sundhnúk crater series and only a fraction of that amount has returned to the surface. Before the eruption began, about 22 million cubic meters had been added to the magma accumulation area under Svartsengi from the last eruption and it is therefore possible that there is still room for further magma movements.“

Kilauea (Hawai’i): (2 Apr) The high lava-fountain phase of the current eruptive episode (number 16), which had begun late on 31 March. continues: The volcano Observatory HVO wrote that the tall fountains started in Halemaʻumaʻu crater at 10:24 a.m. HST local time on April 1, 2025, about 12 hours after the start of the episode. „Fountaining from the south vent rapidly increased to over 200 feet (70 meters) in height by 10:40 a.m. HST and exceeded 700 feet (215 m) by 10:50 a.m. HST. Low dome fountaining and overflows continue from the north vent. „Episode 16 was preceded by weak spattering in the north vent that began at approximately 5:20 p.m. HST on March 31, 2025. Since 6:00 p.m. HST, spattering became continuous and increased to low fountaining (15-30 feet or 5-10 meters high). Lava level gradually rose in the vent and began overflowing out of the north vent cone onto the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu at 10:57 p.m. HST on March 31. „At south vent, small spatter fountains were first observed by field crews at 8:30 a.m. HST on April 1, but they probably were active deeper in the vent prior to that time. The south vent became more active at 10:12 a.m. HST on April 1 and began producing significant lava flows. Fountains in this episode are likely to exceed 1000 feet (300 meters) similar to episode 15.“
