Urgent From PETA: Wildfire Survival Tips for Animals  in Boulder County

Boulder County, Colo. – Because the CalWood fire is threatening areas across Boulder County and evacuations are underway, animals must be kept indoors and will die if abandoned.

Residents in areas affected by smoke and falling ash should keep animals indoors and avoid all outdoor activities, such as running with dogs. If visibility is less than 5 miles, smoke has compromised the air quality and reached unsafe levels. Anyone who sees animals in distress and is unable to help, should note their locations and alert authorities immediately.

Trapped horses and other animals can’t outrun wildfires. They should never be locked in their stalls or confined in any way, unable to flee.

Animals must never be left behind. Anyone who evacuates and intentionally abandons animals to fend for themselves may be prosecuted.

PETA has released a wildfire-preparedness public service announcement featuring Dean Winters.  Make plans to ensure the safety of animal companions in advance of trouble in order to avoid being caught unprepared. PETA also offers a video about keeping animal companions safe during fires. For more information, visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Just Now: PETA Protesters Arrested Running Onto Davis Wade Stadium Field Over Dog Experiments

During Football Game, Activists Demand End to Texas A&M’s Cruel Canine Muscular Dystrophy Experiments

Starkville, Miss. — Moments after Texas A&M University (TAMU) scored its first touchdown against Mississippi State at Davis Wade Stadium today, two PETA supporters wearing shirts and brandishing signs proclaiming, “Texas A&M: Stop Cruel Dog Tests,” rushed onto the field. The duo ran around the field—before being tackled and dragged away by security—to slam TAMU for experimenting on golden retrievers who were bred have a debilitating canine form of muscular dystrophy (MD) that leaves the dogs struggling to walk, swallow, and even breathe. The two were charged with disorderly conduct and trespass. Video footage of the disruption is available here.

“For decades, generations of dogs have suffered and died in gruesome experiments that haven’t led to a cure for muscular dystrophy in humans,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA is calling on Texas A&M to care about these tormented dogs as much as it does its football games and release them into loving homes.”

Video footage released by PETA in late 2016 shows golden retrievers and other dogs at TAMU who were deliberately bred to develop a crippling and painful form of canine MD struggling to walk, swallow, and even breathe. Under pressure from PETA supporters, 500 physicians, and people with MD, TAMU stopped breeding dogs to develop the disease. The lead experimenter has retired, and many of the nearly 100 dogs were adopted into homes. But the laboratory still keeps 25 dogs—at least 12 of whom are healthy—imprisoned there.

Urban Outfitters Brands’ Stores Will Be ‘Closed for Cruelty’ by PETA

Tomorrow, PETA activists and an “alpaca” will surround the Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Free People stores in Kansas City and block their entrances as part of the group’s new international campaign demanding that all Urban Outfitters, Inc., brands stop selling alpaca fleece and anything else cruelly obtained from animals. The protesters will hold signs showing the terrified faces of exploited animals and reading, “The Face of Fashion Is Fear.”

When:    Saturday, October 17, 11:30 a.m.—at 12 noon, the protesters will march to the Urban Outfitters store at 520 Nichols Rd., then at 12:30 p.m., they will march to the Free People store at 440 Nichols Rd.

Where:    Anthropologie, 531 Nichols Rd., Kansas City

PETA launched the campaign after Anthropologie was implicated in a first-of-its-kind PETA investigation into the alpaca industry revealing that workers at a farm in Peru tied crying alpacas to a rack, pulling their legs so hard that they nearly came out of their sockets, and left them with bloody wounds from rough shearing. The mutilated animals spit and vomited in fear.

“Urban Outfitters brands want to appeal to open-minded and progressive young people, but they’re missing the mark by selling fleece taken from animals who get beat up, cut up, and killed in the process,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Anything forcibly taken from an animal is a product of fear, and PETA is holding Urban Outfitters to its consumer pledge of sustainability and ethics by calling on the company to sell only vegan materials, which would be easy for it to do because it already stocks them.”

PETA and its affiliates have released dozens of videos revealing that during shearing, workers hit, kick, and mutilate gentle sheep for their wool; leave sensitive goats with bloody, gaping wounds at mohair and cashmere operations; burn, electroshock, beat, and slaughter cows for leather; yank out the feathers of ducks and geese by the fistful for down; and boil silkworms alive to produce silk.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

PETA to ‘Shut Down’ Pittsburgh ExxonMobil Gas Station for Cruelty to Dogs

Because ExxonMobil continues to pump money into the deadly Iditarod dog race even as other sponsors have pulled out, PETA supporters armed with yellow caution tape and “blood”-filled gas jugs will “close” a local ExxonMobil station for cruelty tomorrow. The action follows a PETA protest outside the company’s headquarters and is one of many planned for ExxonMobil locations nationwide.

When:    Saturday, October 17, 12 noon

Where:    ExxonMobil gas station, 7338 Butler St. (at the intersection with Baker Street and Ballard Way), Pittsburgh

“ExxonMobil has the shameful distinction of being one of the last major companies still sponsoring the Iditarod’s cruelty to dogs,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is urging it to stop propping up an evil industry that forces dogs to run so far and so fast that they often die after inhaling their own vomit.”

Jack Daniel’s, Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, Alaska Airlines, and many other companies cut ties with the race after PETA pointed out that more than 150 dogs have died in the Iditarod since it began. In addition to being tied up on mushers’ properties (as revealed in this PETA exposé), dogs are forced to pull heavy sleds across 1,000 miles through blinding blizzards and subzero temperatures.

More than 220 dogs were pulled off the trail during the 2020 race because of exhaustion, illness, injury, or other causes. One, Cool Cat, developed twisted intestines and almost died. Another, Betty, had pneumonia and was in critical condition, and two others refused to eat and had fevers, diarrhea, and persistent coughs.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
