Urgent From PETA: Cruel—and Criminal—to Abandon Animals During Hurricane Zeta

As Hurricane Zeta approaches—and because a tropical storm warning is now in effect for parts of Alabama including Birmingham, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa—never leave dogs tethered or penned outside and always to take animal companions with you if you have to evacuate your home.

Believe it or not, every time there’s a natural disaster, many dogs and other companion animals are left outside to fend for themselves and even left behind when humans evacuate. Dogs kept tethered will swim to exhaustion and drown—and there are tethered dogs everywhere. PETA’s Animal Rescue Team has witnessed firsthand the trauma that animals endure when left behind to face floodwaters and flying debris. During previous storms, we have found dogs dead. We have also found them up to their necks in water, unable to sit or lie down, and in almost-submerged crates inside houses and seen animals who have been flung around by high winds. And of course, animals are petrified in these kinds of weather conditions.

PETA has released a natural disaster–preparedness PSA featuring Dean Winters. Make plans to ensure the safety of animal companions long before evacuating. For more information, please visit PETA.org.

Topless PETA Protesters to Ask Urban Outfitters to Ditch Wool

Tomorrow, as part of PETA’s #WoolFreeWinter initiative, the group’s wool-free warriors—dressed in black pants, sweaters, and combat boots—will gather outside the Urban Outfitters store on Melrose Avenue and pull off their winter sweaters to reveal “Naked Truth: Wool Hurts” messages and “No Wool” symbols across their bare chests and backs.

When:    Thursday, October 29, 12 noon

Where:    Urban Outfitters, 7650 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles

“Any store that wants to appeal to ethical young people misses the mark by selling wool taken from sheep who get beaten up, cut, and killed in the process,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on Urban Outfitters to stick to the vegan fabrics that progressive shoppers want and that its stores already carry.”

PETA and its international affiliates have exposed egregious cruelty to animals at more than 100 wool industry operations spanning four continents, revealing that sheep are beaten, kicked, thrown, cut, and mutilated and that—once their wool production declines—many are slashed across the throat, sometimes while fully conscious. The group has launched an international campaign demanding that all Urban Outfitters, Inc., brands—which include Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban Outfitters—stop selling sheep’s wool and anything else cruelly obtained from animals.

It Was a Dirty Job, but Someone Had to Save This Kitten

When a Chesapeake, Virginia, woman heard strange sounds emanating from a storm drain, everyone she reported it to thought she was imagining it (or perhaps It?). Despite repeated rebuffs and perhaps beginning to question her own sanity, she didn’t give up, finally calling PETA.

When our fieldworkers arrived on the scene, they confirmed that the sounds were not a figment of Stephen King’s or anyone else’s imagination: As improbable as it seemed, they heard the unmistakable mewing of a kitten echoing from the sewer grate.

Having been trapped all alone in the dank, dark depths for who knows how long, the kitten was frantic, screaming at the top of his tiny lungs.

Even though the fieldworkers could hear his cries clearly, locating the source was another matter altogether. First, they tried coaxing him to safety, but he was too shell-shocked to budge.

The fieldworkers spent hours army-crawling through murky pipes, but still the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Kitten” managed to elude them. Tired and running out of daylight, they set a cage trap in the tunnel and sat back to wait.

Cowabunga! The kitten was so ravenous that he couldn’t resist the tempting aroma of cat food and mustered up the courage to emerge from his hiding place.

Back at the Sam Simon Center—PETA’s Norfolk, Virginia, headquarters—the 8-week-old warrior got a hot bath to wash off the muck and wolfed down a square meal before passing out from sheer exhaustion.

Dubbed Michelangelo (aka “Mikey”) after another famous sewer denizen, our subterranean tabby is quickly regaining his strength in a PETA foster home.

We’re not sure if Mikey shares his namesake’s love of pineapple pizza, but we do know that he’s eager to start fighting crime from the comfort of an above-ground home base. Don’t make him break out the nunchucks: Become this kitten’s hero in a half shell by e-mailing us at Adopt@peta.org.

PETA to ‘Shut Down’ Esso Gas Station for Cruelty to Dogs

Because ExxonMobil—the parent company of Esso—continues to pump money into the deadly Iditarod dog race even as other sponsors have pulled out, PETA supporters armed with yellow caution tape and “blood”-filled gas jugs will “close” a local Esso station for cruelty tomorrow. The action follows PETA protests outside Exxon’s headquarters in the U.S. and at the company’s gas stations around the world.

When:    Wednesday, October 28, 4:45 p.m.

Where:    Esso gas station, 1809 Tecumseh Rd. E. (at the intersection with Kildare Road), Windsor

“Esso’s parent company has the shameful distinction of being one of the last major sponsors of the Iditarod’s cruelty to dogs,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is urging it to cut ties with an evil industry that forces dogs to run so far and so fast that they often die after inhaling their own vomit.”

Jack Daniel’s, Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, Alaska Airlines, and many other companies cut ties with the race after PETA pointed out that more than 150 dogs have died in the Iditarod since it began. In addition to being tied up on mushers’ properties (as revealed in this PETA exposé), dogs are forced to pull heavy sleds 1,000 miles through blinding blizzards and subzero temperatures.

More than 220 dogs were pulled off the trail during the 2020 race because of exhaustion, illness, injury, or other causes. One, Cool Cat, developed twisted intestines and almost died. Another, Betty, had pneumonia and was in critical condition, and two others refused to eat and had fevers, diarrhea, and persistent coughs.
