Start the Countdown to Christmas With These Vegan Advent Calendars
As you start the countdown to Christmas, advent calendars can help get you in the mood to celebrate. Even if you don’t observe Christmas, they can be a great way to treat yourself during the holiday season. (Think of it as a countdown to the new year instead.) Many advent calendars contain chocolates made with cow’s milk, which is stolen from mother cows who are subjected to the dairy industry’s cruel practices. Keep mother cows and their babies together by choosing dairy-free goodies to celebrate the season.
These vegan advent calendars will help you get into the Christmas spirit:

PETA’s Winter Weather Survival Tips for Animals in Ohio
Ahead of Winter Safety Awareness Week (November 15 to 21), PETA is sharing tips for keeping animals safe. They are especially vulnerable in cold weather, and there were at least 37 cold weather–related companion animal deaths in 2019. (Those are just the ones that were reported—most aren’t.)
The following steps can go a long way in helping animals survive Ohio’s fierce winter:
- Bring Them Indoors
Companion animals should always live indoors. “Backyard dogs” and “outdoor cats”—like those featured in Breaking the Chain, the new documentary produced by Oscar winner Anjelica Huston—often go without adequate food, water, shelter, and veterinary care. They are no better equipped to survive freezing temperatures or extreme weather conditions than humans are, they suffer terribly from frostbite, and they can die of exposure.
- Gear Up
Coats will keep dogs comfortable in cold weather, secure harnesses can help prevent them from getting loose on walks, and booties will protect their sensitive paw pads from the frozen ground. Keep walks short in cold weather, especially for shorthaired dogs.
- Don’t Forget Birds
During extreme winter weather, provide birds and other wild animals with access to an emergency water supply by filling a heavy nonmetal water bowl (tongues can freeze to metal) and breaking the surface ice at least twice a day.
Good Samaritans who see companion animals kept chained or penned outside 24/7 or without adequate shelter from the elements should note the animals’ exact location and alert local law-enforcement authorities immediately. Anyone who leaves animals outside to suffer in severe weather may be prosecuted.
PETA has released a cold-weather public service announcement. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

PETA Statement: Why Human Antibodies Are Superior to Chicken Antibodies for Fighting the Novel Coronavirus
Please see the following statement from PETA regarding the use of chicken antibodies to fight the novel coronavirus:
Snorting chicken antibodies to ward off COVID-19 infections may sound like a joke, but it’s actually just bad science.
For scientific and ethical reasons, an end to using animals to produce antibodies was recommended by the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing, a government organization that plays a critical role in determining the scientific acceptance and regulatory use of non-animal testing methods within the EU as well as globally.
Non-animal antibodies can be produced faster than chicken antibodies, and they overcome numerous scientific issues associated with antibodies derived from chickens, llamas, horses, camels, rabbits, mice, or other animals. In fact, animal-derived antibodies are one of the main drivers of the reproducibility crisis in scientific research.
YUMAB, a biotechnology company in Germany, announced in March that it had generated and characterized the first human antibodies to fight the novel coronavirus, and it has since confirmed therapeutic effects by using a patient-derived strain of SARS-CoV-2.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.

PETA Statement: Kopenhagen Fur to Close
Below please find a statement from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk following the news about Kopenhagen Fur announcing plans to shut down:
Virtual champagne corks are popping at PETA and all its affiliates over the news of the demise of Kopenhagen Fur, a business built on the suffering of caged animals denied a life and then killed for their fur. Since the public and almost every designer around the globe now shuns fur, it’s not surprising that two of the world’s biggest fur companies—in Canada and Denmark—have collapsed. Fur is well and truly dead.
