Ann Arbor Eateries Win Spot on PETA’s List of Top Vegan Chili Dishes

To celebrate the start of fall, PETA has scoured the country for the best vegan chili dishes—and The Lunch Room Bakery & Cafe and its sister establishment, the Detroit Street Filling Station, have landed a spot on the list for their Hearty Chili, loaded with sweet potatoes, butternut squash, black and kidney beans, and tomatillo and flavored with zesty seasonings.

“Chili bowls are the ultimate comfort food, and this one comes with the comforting thought that no animals were harmed to make it,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA celebrates The Lunch Room and the Detroit Street Filling Station for helping people tuck into their favorite foods without the cruelty or the cholesterol.”

PETA notes that the meat industry brands cows, castrates them, and rips the horns out of their skulls, often without any painkillers. Afterward, workers pack the animals into filthy feedlots and then into transport trucks for a terrifying trip to the slaughterhouse. Vegan meat sales increased 148% in 2020 compared to the year before, and 47% of Americans want to incorporate more vegan foods into their meals in 2021.

Other honorees include Plant Bae in Montgomery, Alabama; Arles & Boggs Vegan Eatery in Wallingford, Connecticut; House of Leaf & Bean in Jacksonville, Florida; The Grit in Athens, Georgia; and Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C. Each eatery will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers many vegan chili recipes on its website.

MoxieLash Bans Fur Eyelashes

MoxieLash made the compassionate decision to ban fur eyelashes after learning from PETA that the mink fur used to make false eyelashes comes from animals on factory farms who suffer inside cramped, barren wire cages before being electrocuted or gassed. We applaud MoxieLash for joining Sephora, Velour, and many others that refuse to sell mink eyelashes. We’re calling on Lilly Lashes and OpulenceMD Beauty to join them in banning fur eyelashes as well.

PETA ‘Primate’ to Protest UW Torture on First Day of Class

Tomorrow, a group of PETA supporters—including one dressed as Dorothy, a monkey who was exploited at the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) until her frail, diseased body collapsed—will descend on the University of Washington (UW) campus on the first day of class with the message “New to Campus? Torturing Monkeys Isn’t.” Another protester will wear a TV showing footage of the university’s experiments on monkeys.

When:    Wednesday, September 29, 11:45 a.m.–1 p.m.

Where:    UW’s Red Square in front of Suzzallo Library

“The WaNPRC’s actions have been hidden from students and faculty for too long—and they need to know the truth,” says PETA Senior Science Advisor Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, a primate scientist and former UW professor. “PETA is calling on UW to close down this cruel laboratory and release the surviving monkeys to reputable sanctuaries where they’d have a chance at enjoying peace, companionship, and proper care at last.”

It’s OFISHal: Newtown Brand Honored for Its Vegan Seafood

With National Seafood Month (October) just around the corner, PETA took the opportunaty to rank the country’s Top 10 Vegan Sea Food Brands, and local company Good Catch landed a spot on the list! Good Catch’s crispy vegan fillets and savory vegan crab cakes are available in supermarket freezer aisles—along with its flaky “fish” sticks and more.

“We had fun tasting so many vegan items, and Good Catch’s fish-free options are off the hook,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s favorite brands will help anyone celebrate National Seafood Month while leaving sea animals in the sea, where they belong.”

Vegan seafood is free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol and prevents fish from being gutted on the decks of fishing boats, live lobsters from being dropped into boiling water, and crabs from being dismembered while still conscious. And vegan meats are more popular than ever—sales increased 148% in 2020 compared to the year before, and 47% of Americans want to incorporate more vegan foods into their meals in 2021.

Other honorees include BeLeaf in City of Industry, California; Kuleana in San Francisco; Sophie’s Kitchen in Sebastopol, California; May Wah Vegetarian Market in New York City; and The Plant Based Seafood Co in Grimstead, Virginia. Each company will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers many vegan seafood recipes on its website.
