Working From Home? Keep Your Dog Happy With These 7 Toys

Working from home is an excellent arrangement for you and your animal companion. Who wouldn’t want to earn a living alongside a canine “coworker”? But as fun as that can be, dogs still have needs—they can become bored and lonely, even when you’re physically together in the same space. A daily routine that includes exercise, affection, and entertaining toys can help keep your dog happy and healthy.

Since you won’t be able to give your dog your undivided attention while you work, toys are essential. They help relieve boredom when you have to pay attention to your computer screen or hop on a Zoom call, and they provide your dog with stress relief, exercise, and relaxation. So, check out this list of eight toys to keep those tails wagging.

1. Plush Dog Toy

This plush toy will give your canine companion hours of entertainment and exercise while you’re working from home—plus, it supports a good cause. For every toy sold, Bears for Humanity will donate a toy to an ignored “backyard” dog through PETA’s Community Animal Project.

*****

Work can place heavy demands on our time and attention, but one of our most important jobs is keeping our animal companions safe, healthy, and happy. If you’re thinking about adding a canine companion to your family, remember: Adopt, don’t shop! Never buy a dog from a pet store, local breeder, Craigslist advertisement, or neighbor—why buy when there are millions of dogs waiting in shelters to be adopted? Every animal purchased takes a chance at adoption away from a homeless dog. If you’re ready for the commitment of welcoming a new canine family member into your home, the only responsible way to do so is to adopt from a reputable shelter.

Chambersburg Petco Store to Face Flack Over Caged-Bird Sales

Motorists passing by the Petco store on Route 30 are in for an eyeful, courtesy of PETA, which has placed an important message directly in front of the store: “Life in a Cage Is No Life at All. Never Buy Birds.” And to drive the message home, PETA supporters will protest outside the store on Thursday, holding signs urging shoppers, “Don’t Go to Petco.”

When:    December 9, 10–11 a.m.

Where:    Petco, 1320 Lincoln Way E., Chambersburg

“There are no happy holidays for caged birds, who scream, tear out their feathers, and go insane under the stress of captivity,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on shoppers to steer clear of Petco, which will be on the ‘naughty’ list as long as it sells any animals as though they were home decor.”

In nature, birds perch in treetops, splash in lakes, soar high above the ground, woo mates, feed their babies, and communicate with the other members of their often large flock—none of which they can do in captivity. The pet industry breeds birds in filthy mills, steals chicks away from their mothers, clips their wings so that they can’t fly away, and sells them to buyers who are often unprepared to provide them with the decades of specialized care that they need, causing many to languish and even die of neglect.

Kirshner Leopard Handling Continues After Attack: PETA Calls for Crackdown

A leopard attack at the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation hasn’t stopped the roadside zoo from allowing employees to directly handle big cats—including during a recent display at a local juvenile detention center, whose employees were also allowed to hold a snow leopard cub—so today, PETA submitted a complaint to the California Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) calling for an investigation into Kirshner’s apparent employee endangerment.

Earlier this year, after an Amur leopard named Royal jumped on a volunteer who had entered an enclosure with him—causing puncture wounds to her neck that required hospitalization—Cal/OSHA cited Kirshner for a “serious” violation of workplace safety regulations. The roadside zoo was required to pay a $1,800 penalty.

“A leopard sent a volunteer to the hospital, and this roadside zoo is still allowing employees to handle dangerous big cats,” says PETA Foundation Deputy General Counsel for Captive Animal Law Enforcement Brittany Peet. “PETA is calling on the state to crack down on this sleazy operation, which needs to stop harassing big cats immediately.”

After the leopard attack, the U.S. Department of Agriculture also slapped Kirshner with a “critical” citation for failing to meet the minimum requirements of the federal Animal Welfare Act, noting that after pouncing on the volunteer, the leopard was able to escape into the fenced-in area around the enclosure—all while members of the public were on the property.

Rev. Robert Turner and PETA Team Up to Launch Food Justice Grocery Giveaway in Baltimore

It’s a great new twist on the after-church fellowship meal: After leading the Sunday service at Empowerment Temple AME, Rev. Dr. Robert Turner, and State Senator Hayes—a member of the church—will join PETA and The Land of Kush in dishing out free vegan barbecue rib wraps as well as handing out free bags of groceries to members of the community as part of PETA’s food justice campaign. The group’s vegan meal starter kits of protein-packed and versatile tofu, fresh fruits and vegetables, recipes, and more are designed with nutrition in mind. PETA will also invite people to call on their representatives to redirect meat, egg, and dairy industry subsidies as incentives for grocers in “food deserts” to stock healthy, humane vegan foods. Rev. Turner was with PETA last month to hand out free food to those gathering to pray for justice at the trial of Ahmaud Arbery’s killers in Georgia.

When:    Sunday, December 5, 11:30 a.m.

Where:    Empowerment Temple AME, 4217–4221 Primrose Ave., Baltimore

“All families deserve to have equally good access to fresh, healthy plant-based foods,” says Rev. Turner. “Food justice is also racial justice, and I’m pleased to work with PETA to address this issue nationwide.”

Maryland’s government spends millions of tax dollars each year subsidizing the bloated meat, egg, and dairy industries. In 2020, the state gave $10 million to chicken factory farmers, when that money could have gone toward making healthy foods available in underserved areas where people have no ready access to fresh vegetables and fruits and other good foods. About one in four people in Baltimore live in an underserved community, and nearly one-third of the city’s residents don’t have access to a car, making local access to fresh foods essential.

“The government is propping up Big Meat while families in food deserts struggle to gain access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and that needs to change,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s food justice campaign aims to call attention to the inequities and unhealthy choices people in ‘food deserts’ face.”

Stocking stores in food deserts with healthy vegan food would save animals’ lives; help vulnerable communities reduce their rates of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes; and help protect the environment, given that animal agriculture is responsible for nearly one-fifth of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions and is a leading cause of habitat destruction, species extinction, and ocean dead zones.

Rev. Turner previously hosted a PETA food justice giveaway in Tulsa shortly before relocating to Baltimore.

PETA launched the food justice campaign in Atlanta with Pinky Cole of Slutty Vegan; held other giveaways in Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and New York; and has planned additional events throughout the country.
