Please see the following statement from PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna regarding a federal inspection report obtained by PETA documenting serious animal welfare violations in the laboratories of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIC). According to the report, a female lamb—between 6 and 12 months of age—“died during a veterinary teaching class” as a result of “severe hemorrhage along the side of [her] neck” while students were practicing drawing blood from animals. In another incident, a 2-month-old rabbit apparently suffered with a leg fracture for at least a day before she was treated by a veterinarian. The rabbit was euthanized.

UIC’s veterinary school should be promoting compassion and empathy for animals. Instead, it uses sentient beings as pin cushions and testing tools. According to a federal inspection report, a lamb bled out after students incompetently attempted to restrain her as she struggled and pierced her repeatedly. It was determined that she had likely died from a “severe hemorrhage along the right side of [her] neck.” It’s difficult to imagine the lamb’s pain and terror in a cacophonous classroom as she was pinned to a cold procedure table and handled roughly while needles were plunged into her body—eventually causing her life to drain away. UIC would do well to modernize its classrooms using virtual programs and lifelike animal models and simulators, not only to train its students on veterinary methods but also to reinforce the Veterinarian’s Oath that skills and knowledge should be used for the benefit of animal health and welfare.

Influencers to Push Urban Outfitters to Make Vegan Switch

Tomorrow, social media influencers Angela Martini, Francesca Farago, Megan Lourdes, and Tanaya Henry—who have a combined reach of more than 7 million followers—will confront Urban Outfitters executives at the company’s virtual annual meeting and ask the following question (full details appear below) on PETA’s behalf: “When will URBN leaders take our generation’s concerns seriously and stop selling cruelly obtained and environmentally destructive animal-derived materials?”

When:    Tuesday, June 7, 12 noon

Where:    Urban Outfitters, 110 S. 36th St., Philadelphia

At the same time, supporters in cow, sheep, and goose costumes will raise a ruckus outside the Urban Outfitters store on S. 36th Street, and provocative posters by street artist Praxis are already plastered throughout downtown Philly and near the URBN headquarters in the Navy Yard. It’s all part of PETA’s campaign calling on Urban Outfitters brands to opt for eco-friendly vegan materials and leave alpaca fleece, wool, leather, down, mohair, cashmere, and all other animal-derived materials on their original owners.

“When progressive young shoppers learn that sensitive animals are tormented and killed for clothing, they’re eager to hold brands accountable,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is pushing Urban Outfitters to listen to its customers; stop stealing animals’ skins, fleece, and feathers; and switch to selling only sustainable vegan materials.”

PETA Statement: ‘Doc’ Antle Behind Bars—Just Like the Animals He Exploited

The FBI has reportedly just arrested Tiger King villain and Myrtle Beach Safari operator Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, whose initial hearing is reportedly set for Monday. Below, please find a statement from PETA Foundation Associate Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Debbie Metzler:

“It’s fitting that “Doc” Antle is behind bars after years of locking up the endangered animals he uses in tawdry photo ops. His legal woes are mounting, as PETA recently blew the whistle on his apparent “charity” scam, and the end to his reign of terrorizing tiger cubs can’t come soon enough.”

More details about Antle’s exploitation of animals—which PETA has been fighting for years—are available here.

New Clinic, New Jobs! PETA Grows Local Low-Cost Veterinary Services

The Jessica Beath Clinic at Farrington Firehouse got a makeover recently as PETA set up shop to offer low-cost spay/neuter services for the region’s cats and dogs, helping to prevent companion animal overpopulation and homelessness. The brick-and-mortar facility marks an expansion of PETA’s fleet of four high-volume mobile spay/neuter clinics, which have performed more than 200,000 sterilization surgeries for hundreds of underserved communities in Virginia for two decades.

PETA is eager to provide even more services and is looking for the following veterinary professionals to join the team. (Listings are also available at PETA.org/Jobs.)

  • Licensed veterinary technicians, who perform physical exams on patients and administer and monitor vaccines and for whom relief contract employment is available
  • Veterinary assistants, who admit patients to the clinic and monitor them throughout discharge
  • Veterinarians, who perform surgical sterilizations and oversee the administration of pre-anesthetic and anesthetic drugs and for whom relief contract employment is available
  • Client services representatives, who assist with checking in clients, data entry, and the day-to-day operations of the program and promote the humane care of animals

“While the pandemic led many other clinics to close, animal guardians are still eager to do the right thing by seeking sterilization services for their beloved cats and dogs and giving them a happier, healthier future,” says PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA can barely keep up with the backlog of patients and invites skilled, caring veterinary professionals in the region to join our team.”

The clinic is located at 12300 Farrington Rd. Animal guardians can request an appointment by calling 804-752-7729 or visiting PETA.org/SpayNeuterAppt.

Win for Horses! New York Says ‘Neigh’ to $450 Million Horse Racing Industry Ask

After hearing from PETA, our supporters, and members of the Coalition to End Horse Racing Subsidies, New York state legislators declined to move a New York Racing Association (NYRA) money-grab bill forward. If passed, $450 million in state-backed bonds would have gone toward building a fancy clubhouse at Belmont Park, and this is the first time New York legislators have said “no” to the greedy New York horse racing industry. Read on to find out why this is a major win for horses.

The Racing Industry Is Horrible for Horses

Being forced to participate at New York racetracks is often the equivalent of a death sentence for horses. Since 2009, more than 1,600 horses have died at racetracks in the state, and at least 105 of those deaths occurred in 2021.

Horses who survive the races suffer behind the scenes, often forced to train and race with painful preexisting injuries that should warrant pulling them from competition. In the weeks leading up to a race, horses are often administered a cocktail of anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, sedatives, hormones, stimulants, diuretics, and muscle relaxants, either to mask their pain or to enhance their performance. This can lead to broken bones and death. Racehorses are the victims of a money-driven industry that frequently uses drugs to push them to peak performance and hide their injuries. They’re sometimes sent to slaughter when their racing or breeding “careers” end.

Take Action to Stop the Greedy New York Horse Racing Industry in Its Tracks

Although horse racing across the country has seen a financial decline over the years, the industry has been propped up in New York by more than $2.9 billion in state taxpayer funds and government benefits since 2008. (That’s more than twice the money the state budgeted for its department of agriculture in the same time period and 13 times what it spent on veterans’ services.)

A 2021 Marist Poll survey revealed that 91% of New Yorkers have no plans to visit a state racetrack and bet on horse racing, 5% plan to go once, and 1% plan to go twice. Residents of the state, not the 11 privately owned Thoroughbred and harness tracks, should be the recipients of subsidies. The $230 million in annual subsidies should be redirected to education. To protect horses and humans in their jurisdiction, New York legislators need to stop padding the NYRA’s wallet.
