Harris Teeter to Face PETA Rally After Felony Charges Filed Against Turkey Supplier’s Ex-Workers

Armed with signs reading, “Harris Teeter Still Selling ‘Humane’ Cruelty,” PETA supporters will raise a ruckus outside the supermarket on W. Sixth Street to urge Harris Teeter to reconsider its ties to Plainville Farms after a PETA exposé revealed workers kicking, choking, and stomping on birds and beating them with a heavy metal rod, despite Plainville’s self-described “humane” label. The action follows news earlier this month that the Pennsylvania State Police charged 11 former workers with 139 counts of cruelty to animals, including six felonies, across six counties—the largest number of charges in any factory-farmed animal case in U.S. history.

When:    Thursday, October 27, 12 noon

Where:    Harris Teeter, 325 W. Sixth St., Charlotte

“There’s no excuse for Harris Teeter to continue to allow customers to be duped by ‘humane’ claims on turkey packages after Plainville workers racked up felony charges for tormenting birds who were unable to walk,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on Harris Teeter to reevaluate its support of this abusive company and reminds everyone that the only humane meal is a vegan one.”

PETA Files Complaint With Feds After a Sheep Bleeds Out in Cornell Lab

PETA is calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to launch an investigation and take action against Cornell University after the school’s own records show many violations of animal welfare regulations that the agency has so far ignored.

PETA has obtained records that show a sheep died at Cornell after experimenters botched a surgery and that they gave 24 other sheep inappropriate, unapproved medication before or after surgery. Although these alarming incidents indicate clear violations of animal welfare regulations, the USDA—whose job it is to oversee laboratories—has so far done nothing.

We’re also demanding that Martha E. Pollack, Cornell’s president, take immediate steps to end the university’s culture of cruelty by canceling experiments that violate animal welfare regulations and revoking violators’ permission to access any animal laboratory.

Records show that a sheep died after experimenters sloppily conducted a carotid artery graft surgery with inferior materials. The surgery failed, and experimenters then conducted a second one. That also failed, and they euthanized the sheep.

Lambs with mothers

Records also indicate that on numerous occasions, Cornell experimenters were unwilling or unable to follow basic, minimum standards of animal care in the school’s laboratories. Incidents arose from staff inattentiveness, incompetence, or callousness, resulting in suffering and sometimes death. These incidents include the following:

  • On three separate occasions, experimenters failed to provide mice with water, causing them to become dehydrated.
  • Experimenters added the wrong drug dosage to drinking water, and a mouse died as a result.
  • Experimenters failed to monitor mice they had likely infected with the wrong dose of influenza virus. Seven mice died, and 32 others became lethargic.
  • On two separate occasions, mice died following injections. One report said a staff member had to be “retrained.”
  • Experimenters gave three different types of expired drugs to 910 mice.
  • On multiple occasions, experimenters used ineffective and unapproved methods and materials to sterilize equipment used in surgeries.

Cornell’s negligence and disregard for basic animal welfare have resulted in prolonged and needless suffering and sometimes death. This pattern must not be allowed to continue. The USDA should immediately investigate the alarming failures at Cornell and take swift, decisive action, including by citing the university for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act.

Ignoring flagrant violations of animal welfare laws and regulations fosters a culture of permissiveness and cruelty in the school’s laboratories that must be stopped immediately. The university should adopt PETA scientists’ Research Modernization Deal—a strategy for replacing animal experiments with modern, human-relevant, animal-free research methods.

What You Can Do

Join thousands of PETA supporters who have already called on Congress to stop throwing away taxpayer money on cruel, useless animal experiments and instead focus on superior, non-animal research methods:

VR Aliens to Give Close Encounter With Animal Testing

On Wednesday, “aliens” will crash-land on PETA’s rooftop, transport people to a spaceship, and subject them to terrifying experiments that resemble what animals face in laboratories. The unique virtual reality experience will kick off PETA’s new Abduction campaign tour tour, which will visit college campuses across the country—all of which house facilities where animals are imprisoned and tormented in laboratories—and put visitors in the place of monkeys, rats, mice, and other animals who are mutilated and killed in cruel, useless tests.

When:    Wednesday, October 26, 4–9 p.m.

Where:    On the roof of PETA’s Bob Barker Building, 2154 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles

“The launch of Abduction marks the first time people are getting a first-person glimpse into the horrors experienced by frightened and confused animals in barren laboratories,” says PETA Senior Director Rachelle Owen. “PETA is rallying people across the country to demand a switch to superior, non-animal research that leaves our fellow Earthlings in peace.”

Studies show that 90% of all basic research—most of which involves animals—fails to lead to treatments for humans, which is why PETA is pushing universities to pivot to sophisticated, human-relevant research methods.

Abduction—which was filmed in VR180 with assistance from the virtual reality creation studio Prosper XR—will stop at college campuses including Harvard University, Yale University, and Virginia Tech.

Photos: Police Arrest ‘Husky’ at PETA Protest Against F1’s Iditarod Ties

The Iditarod dog-sledding race, in which more than 150 dogs have died, forces dogs to cross nearly 1,000 grueling miles of ice in biting wind, causing them to suffer from bleeding ulcers, frostbite, heart attacks, and pneumonia, and some even die from inhaling their own vomit. That’s why PETA is calling on Formula One (F1), which is owned by Iditarod sponsor Liberty Media, to cut ties with this death race at protests this weekend at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

At today’s protest, police detained three of PETA’s protesters, including one in a husky dog costume, and removed them from the property in a golf cart.

The protesters were issued a trespass warning and are prohibited from returning to Circuit of the Americas, but the rest of this weekend’s protests will go full steam ahead on the public property in front of the racetrack’s entrance.

When: Saturday, October 22, at 12 noon and Sunday, October 23, at 10 a.m.

Where: 9201 Circuit of the Americas Blvd., Austin

At the protests, a PETA “husky” mascot, representing the 150 dogs who have died in the Iditarod, is leading other animal defenders as they gather outside the F1 Grand Prix with signs reading, “Formula 1: Cut Ties With Iditarod Cruelty!”

PETA has already persuaded Millennium Hotels and Resorts, Coca-Cola, ExxonMobil, Alaska Airlines, and Wells Fargo to pull their sponsorships. And now we want Liberty Media to put the brakes on permanently for its support of the notorious race and the abuse and suffering of dogs both during and after the event, which are reflected in this damning video footage.

Urge F1’s Owner to Stop Supporting the Deadly Iditarod

Liberty Media still has ties to the deadly event because GCI, which it owns, continues to sponsor the race to the tune of more than $250,000 every year. Why would F1 want to be associated with cruelty to dogs? We bet most drivers—particularly those with dogs, like Lewis Hamilton—would say that it should get out now!

Racing should involve only willing human participants. Please politely ask F1’s owner to stop supporting the cruel Iditarod.
