Stumptown Coffee Roasters Wins National Award for Making Oat Milk the Default Option

A whole latte love is heading to locally based Stumptown Coffee Roasters, winner of PETA’s Compassionate Coffee Chain Award. The group is honoring Stumptown for its decision to make oat milk the default option in all of its milk-based drinks—a move that helps prevent day-old calves from being torn away from their mothers in the dairy industry, a top producer of greenhouse gases. Stumptown, which belongs to a growing list of businesses that—unlike Starbucks—don’t charge extra for vegan milks, will receive a framed certificate and a box of cow-shaped vegan chocolates.

“PETA credits Stumptown with promoting a compassionate brew by leaving mother cows and their calves in peace and helping to slash greenhouse gas emissions fueled by the environmentally disastrous dairy industry,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges coffee drinkers to buy only from ethical roasters that encourage kindness and don’t upcharge for plant milk options.”

More people than ever are choosing plant milks, and the consumption of dairy milk has declined by 40% over the past 50 years. Stumptown said it switched to oat milk as the default option because of its creamy deliciousness, increasing customer demand, and its lower impact on the climate.

Stumptown, Panera Bread, Pret A Manger, Noah’s New York Bagels, Blue Bottle Coffee, and Philz Coffee offer dairy-free milk at no extra charge, but Starbucks charges more, despite agreeing that vegan milks are better for the planet than dairy milk. PETA, along with more than 140,000 supporters, is calling on Starbucks to end its price hike on vegan milks.

Dog Defenders Slapped With Trespass Warning While DA Fails to Charge Deputy in Dogs’ Deaths

Just days after three peaceful PETA supporters politely knocked on Rockdale County District Attorney (DA) Alisha Johnson’s door on December 22 to ask when she would file cruelty-to-animals charges against Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) Deputy Eric Tolbert—who admitted to confining three breathing-impaired breed (BIB) dogs to a shed as temperatures soared to 95 degrees, causing their deaths, and then “trashing” them—authorities issued a trespass warning, even though video footage shows that the trio left Johnson’s doorstep immediately after they were asked to do so.

More than six months have passed since Tolbert confined LaLa, Storm, and Luke Cage to the stifling shed despite knowing that BIBs, as he told investigators, “can’t pant normally, to cool off like normal dogs.” After the first dog died, he left the other two crated in the shed while he went to work the next day. When he returned, he found one dead and one barely clinging to life, but instead of rushing the dying animal to emergency care, he “poured lemon juice in there,” he told investigators. He said that after the dogs’ deaths, he “trashed ’em,” and decomposing remains were found in trash bins on his property.

“It’s a sorry state in Rockdale County when peacefully knocking on the district attorney’s door gets a lightning-fast criminal trespass warning, but causing three dogs’ slow and agonizing deaths merits no action at all,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is calling on DA Johnson to do her duty, recognize cruelty to animals that’s staring her in the face, and file long-overdue cruelty charges against Deputy Tolbert.”

After investigating the dogs’ deaths and finding two other dogs—including Tolbert’s assigned K-9, Aegis—unattended in squalid pens on his property, the RCSO removed Aegis and demoted Tolbert from his position as a K-9 handler, but he remains an RCSO deputy and no criminal charges have been filed to date despite calls from the community.

After PETA’s Push, Chris Brown’s Monkey Dealer Gets License Terminated by Feds

Following a push from PETA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has terminated the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) license of Florida-based exotic-animal dealer Jimmy Wayne Hammonds (aka “The Monkey Whisperer”), blocking him from legally selling primates for the pet trade for at least the next year. The decision stems from Hammonds’ guilty pleas to federal charges related to the illegal sale and transport of primates—including his notorious sale of a capuchin monkey to singer Chris Brown. Exotic animals are not pets, playthings, or props for celebrities, and they’re not business transactions, either. We are celebrating the USDA’s decision to strip this felon of a license before he could exploit additional vulnerable animals.

PETA Pushed for This Victory

In 2017, PETA alerted California officials to Brown’s unlawful possession of the capuchin, which resulted in the animal’s seizure by the state and two misdemeanor charges levied against Brown. According to the search warrant affidavit, it was our complaint regarding Brown that triggered law enforcement to investigate Hammonds. The affidavit also indicates that officials believed that Hammonds had sold two spider monkeys to rapper Swae Lee. In addition, we alerted California wildlife officials to Lee’s unlawful possession of these spider monkeys, which led to the seizure of at least one of them.

PETA submitted a complaint to the USDA pointing out that the agency had cause to terminate Hammonds’ license, as his convictions include felony conspiracy to commit wildlife trafficking and three counts of violating the Endangered Species Act, prompting the USDA’s enforcement action.

Monkeys and other exotic animals are not “pets.”

Exotic animals kept as “pets” are often bred in captivity by criminal dealers, torn away from their mothers as babies, sold to anyone with a big enough bank account, denied any chance at a natural life, and forced to do whatever their owner chooses for a few social media “likes.”

In their natural habitats, baby capuchin monkeys spend several months, even years, by their mothers’ sides. However, those used as “pets” are typically torn away from their mothers as infants. These monkeys are intelligent, curious, and highly social animals who naturally live in large groups. A human home denies them mental stimulation and opportunities for social interaction with other monkeys, which can lead to frustration and depression. Monkeys kept as “pets” can and will bite humans.

PETA encourages anyone who sees exotic animals being exploited by celebrities on social media to forward the evidence to authorities and to us, as many animal advocates did with Chris Brown and Swae Lee—a move that helped bring down a prolific exotic-animal breeder.

From ‘Dry January’ to ‘Sober October,’ You’ll Be Sipping on These Vegan Mocktails All Year Long

Whether you’re participating in Dry January or Damp January or you just want a tasty drink to sip on at any time throughout the year, mocktails are what you need. These refreshing beverages are a bit fancier than your standard soda or sparkling water, but they’re still alcohol-free, so everyone can enjoy them.

Many of these types of drinks are already vegan (including several store-bought options), but keep an eye out for ones made with ingredients that harm animals. Honey—which is stolen from industrious bees who work hard to produce it—is one common ingredient you might see, along with cow’s milk and even sometimes eggs.

But we’ve got you covered with some of our favorite vegan mocktail recipes to help spark your creativity:

Piña Colada Mocktail

This tropical mocktail features a blend of pineapple and creamy coconut. To keep it vegan, be sure to buy your canned coconut cream from brands that don’t force monkeys to pick coconuts.

Spiritless Harvest Sour

Even non-alcoholic whiskey sour recipes sometimes contain egg, but this one is made with aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas) instead. It’s also made with Spiritless Kentucky 74, a vegan whiskey alternative.

Vegan Virgin Bloody Mary

A favorite for weekend brunch, this Bloody Mary recipe leaves the liquor out but retains all the flavor and nutritional benefits of this savory drink. And by using a vegan Worcestershire sauce, you won’t be mixing fish into your drink, either.

Kin Classic

This take on a classic highball cocktail uses Kin Euphorics’ High Rhode non-alcoholic liquor, which is made with a combination of adaptogens and botanics that are gently relaxing but won’t give you a buzz.

Cozy Chamomile Tea & Lavender Mocktail

Seedlip’s Spice 94 beverage gives this margarita mocktail a lovely, complex flavor. Plus, this brand doesn’t use fish bladders or gelatin for filtration. (Yeah, some brands do that. )
