Will Pharrell Williams Make PETA ‘Happy’ by Pushing Louis Vuitton to Ban Fur and Reptile Skins?

PETA sent a letter to Pharrell Williams congratulating him on his new role as Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director—and asking him to use his influence to ensure that the brand keeps fur and reptile skins out of its future collections.

“Instead of looking to the future of fashion, Louis Vuitton is still clinging to the same old bits of tormented animals’ fur and skin,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Pharrell Williams is an innovator, and PETA hopes to enlist his help in pushing Louis Vuitton to switch entirely to the luxurious, animal-friendly vegan materials it’s already starting to incorporate into its designs.”

PETA’s letter to Williams follows.

Dear Mr. Williams:

Congratulations on joining Louis Vuitton! I hope you’re settling into your new role as Men’s Creative Director.

I’m writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our millions of members and supporters worldwide. Louis Vuitton is one of the last remaining brands that still uses antiquated fur and exotic skins—both of which are the product of tremendous animal abuse. Since you’re known as an innovator who always marches to the beat of his own drum, we’re hoping you will review the following information with an open mind and then use your unique position and power to push the brand to use only luxurious, animal-friendly, vegan fur and exotic skins.

Animals on fur farms—including those that are certified, audited, and/or verified by third parties—spend their entire lives inside wire cages so small that they can only take a few steps. They circle endlessly, chew on the cage bars, and mutilate their own bodies out of intense frustration that often drives them insane. They’re also commonly deprived of necessary medical care. Farmers electrocute, gas, or kill them in some other violent manner and then peel their skin off.

An investigation by PETA Asia revealed workers at facilities that supply LVMH striking pythons repeatedly on the head, suspending them in the air, inflating their bodies with water, and disemboweling them—likely while they were still conscious. Other investigations into the company’s suppliers found workers cutting crocodiles’ necks open and ramming metal rods down their spines while they were still alive and workers violently handling ostriches and cutting their throats.

Chanel, Stella McCartney, and Burberry have stopped using fur and exotic skins, and California has even banned their sale because the industries that produce them are so cruel.

As you’re someone who champions animal activism, we’re sure that this cruelty doesn’t align with your values. Today, innovative, animal- and planet-friendly materials, including bio-based faux fur and embossed fruit and mycelium leathers, are readily available—and Louis Vuitton is already using them! There’s no need for any animal to suffer for fashion.

Will you please confirm that there will be no fur or exotic skins in new Louis Vuitton collections?

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Free Coffee! PETA to Hijack Hagerstown Starbucks Customers in Surcharge War

Because Starbucks agrees that animal-friendly vegan milks are better for the planet than dairy milk but insists on charging extra for them, PETA supporters will gather outside the chain’s Hagerstown Valley Mall location on Tuesday to intercept would-be customers with free RISE Brewing Co. vegan lattes made with creamy oat milk. The action comes after nearly 150,000 PETA supporters asked Starbucks to end its vegan upcharge.

When:    Tuesday, February 28, 7:15 a.m.

Where:    Starbucks, 17326 Valley Mall Rd., Hagerstown

“Starbucks is counting its beans when it should be counting the number of customers it will lose if it doesn’t end the vegan milk upcharge,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “People who choose to drink responsibly for the sake of animals or their own health or because they know that dairy farming is fueling the climate catastrophe are angry with the company for placing profits above ethics.”

PETA has also held vegan coffee drink giveaways outside Starbucks locations in Boston, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and numerous other cities.

Reward in Local Dog Abuse Case Reaches $10,000

PETA is offering a reward of up to $8,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for torturing a dog and leaving him tied up by a necktie inside an apartment complex dumpster near the University of North Carolina –Charlotte campus. PETA’s reward is in addition to the $2,000 offered by the local animal rescue group currently caring for the dog, bringing the possible claimable amount to as much as $10,000.

The tan-and-white pit bull, approximately 2 years old and now named Joey, was discovered at around 2:45 p.m. on February 5. He’s now safe and receiving medical treatment, but exams revealed that he’d been violently abused over a prolonged period, with evidence of many broken bones and a reported loss of vision in one eye due to repeated beatings.

To ensure justice for Joey and to help keep other dogs safe, PETA is asking for the public’s help.

“This dog’s existence must have been filled with daily pain and terror, always in fear and anticipation of the next torture session,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA is seeking the public’s help so that whoever abused and dumped this dog can be held accountable and stopped from hurting anyone else.”

Anyone with information should contact Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control at 704-336-7600.

Up to $5,000 Reward Offered for Safe Return of French Bulldog Stolen at Gunpoint

PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the safe return of a French bulldog as well as the arrest and conviction of two men—and any other accomplices—responsible for stealing the dog at gunpoint from his guardian on E. 72nd Street on Saturday, February 11. Locating the dog is crucial, as he may have special veterinary needs since French bulldogs are a breathing-impaired breed (BIB) because their snouts are so far back against their skulls.

According to reports, around 10 a.m., a 73-year-old woman was walking her black French bulldog, King Tut, when two men who had parked a black, late-model Infiniti in a nearby lot approached her. One of the men—armed with a gun—demanded that the woman give him the 2-year-old dog, threw him in the trunk of the Infiniti, and drove off. Chicago police describe the armed suspect as a Black male between the ages of 18 and 21 who was wearing black sweatpants, a black shirt, and a black ski mask. Police ran the car’s license plates—captured on a nearby surveillance camera—and determined the Infiniti was stolen.

Police are investigating but don’t yet have any leads, so PETA is asking for the public’s help to find King Tut and the people who stole him.

“This dog is in danger after being taken from his devastated guardian by an armed man in broad daylight,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA urges anyone with information to come forward so that King Tut can be reunited with his family and the criminals held accountable and stopped from inflicting any more harm.”

Police have stated that French bulldogs like King Tut are sold for as much as $3,000, and PETA notes that the best way to reduce the demand for “purebred” dogs is to adopt from a shelter and never buy from a breeder, pet store, or potentially shady dealer. French bulldogs and other BIBs are bred for a particular look, resulting in drastically shortened airways that cause an array of painful and distressing symptoms—including labored breathing, snorting, gagging, and collapsing—and make them more susceptible to vomiting, exercise intolerance, heatstroke, and even death.

Tipsters should contact the Chicago Police Department at 312-746-6000.
