Urgent From PETA: Wildfire Survival Tips to Help Animals in British Columbia

With multiple wildfires threatening British Columbia, animals are likely to die if abandoned. This information will undoubtedly save many animals’ lives and avoid much human remorse.

During evacuations, small animals such as cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, and gerbils should be placed securely in carriers (birds should be covered), and dogs should be kept on a secure harness and leash. Take enough food for your animals to last several days. Horses, sheep, cows, llamas, and other large animals should never be locked in stalls or otherwise confined, unable to flee the flames. If it’s impossible to remove them, they should be freed so that they can attempt to survive. Anyone who sees animals in danger or distress should assist if possible, but if they’re unable to help, they should note their exact location and alert authorities immediately.

Residents in areas affected by smoke and falling ash should keep animals indoors and avoid all outdoor activities, such as running with dogs.

Animals must never be left behind. Anyone who evacuates and intentionally abandons animals to fend for themselves may be prosecuted.

PETA has released a wildfire-preparedness public service announcement featuring Ali MacGraw.

Hot Diggity! Doggystyle Scores National Award for Vegan Dog

PETA scoured the country for the Top 10 Vegan Dogs that kick meaty dogs’ buns—and the Gulf Coast’s own Doggystyle has won a top spot for its deliciously craveable vegan dog, the Chicago Hot.

Doggystyle—owned by Steve DiBartolomeo and Melissa Penry—offers customers the option to build their own scrumptious vegan dog with a wide array of topping choices, including hot pepper relish, sauerkraut, red onion sauce, and sport peppers. The award-winning Chicago Hot is a fan-favorite Field Roast vegan dog topped with hot pepper relish, yellow mustard, red onion, diced pickle, diced tomato, a sport pepper, and celery salt.

“The Chicago Hot brings the heat to a summertime classic and is the perfect animal-friendly answer to any comfort food craving,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “All the award wieners on PETA’s national Top 10 list prove that compassion is a delicious business.”

Doggystyle will receive a framed certificate from PETA in honor of its culinary achievement. The other top dogs receiving the group’s recognition are the Rad Dawg at Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck (Portland, Maine), the Scarecrow at The Frankenstand (Los Angeles), the Bahn Me Dawg at Pingala Café (Burlington, Vermont), the Big Daddy Special at Kale My Name (Chicago), the Vegan Buffalo Blu at Sporty Dog Creations (Baltimore), the Vegan Italian Warsaw at The Wienery (Minneapolis), the Coney Dog at VEG-N (Lansing, Michigan), the Vegan at Wiener Kitchen (Overland Park, Kansas), and the Vegan Chilly Cheez Dawg at Chilly Dawgz (Thomasville, Pennsylvania).

In addition to saving nearly 200 animals every year, each person who goes vegan reduces their own risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer and shrinks their carbon footprint.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and offers a free vegan starter kit on its website. Celebrate the 10-Year Anniversary of ‘Blackfish’ With a Watch Party

The 10-year anniversary of Blackfish is on July 19! This powerful, informative documentary exposed viewers to SeaWorld’s exploitation of orcas who have been torn away from their families and confined to concrete tanks that, to them, are the equivalent of bathtubs. Corky is one of the orcas locked inside a tiny tank at SeaWorld, with little to do but swim in endless circles. She’s the longest-held—and quite possibly the saddest—captive orca in the world. To call attention to SeaWorld’s cruelty to orcas and other marine mammals—and encourage caring people to take action against the abusement park—PETA has declared July 24 to be “Boycott SeaWorld” Day.

While compassionate people refuse to go to SeaWorld any day, July 24 is a special time to hold demonstrations, write letters, and take other steps to spread the word about the suffering there. This year, in honor of Blackfish, PETA is encouraging kindhearted folks like you to hold a watch party for your friends, family members, and everyone else you know—and even those you don’t!

  • To host a watch party, simply invite others over and show Blackfish, which is available for free or rent on Amazon Prime, FuboTV, Plex, The Roku Channel, Vudu, Tubi, Crackle, Kanopy, and Magnolia Selects.
  • Serve vegan snacks—any good party needs cruelty-free munchies! Here are some recipes to consider.
  • Print and share PETA’s SeaWorld factsheet with attendees to make sure everyone understands that the company has caused even more suffering than shown in Blackfish.
  • Inspire everyone to do more—have a supply of leaflets and coloring sheets on hand, and urge guests to give them to others. E-mail ActionTeam@peta.org to request these resources.
  • Encourage attendees to have their own watch parties or to share the Blackfish trailer with as many people as possible on social media or via e-mail.

For more ideas, please visit SeaWorldOfHurt.com. And be sure to tell everyone to take action by urging SeaWorld to send whales and dolphins to seaside sanctuaries.

Take Action
