PETA Statement re Moksha Bybee’s Guilty Plea

Moksha Bybee, codefendant of Tiger King villain and Myrtle Beach Safari operator Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, pleaded guilty this week to violating the federal Endangered Species Act by being involved in the sale and transportation of two juvenile cheetahs. Her sentencing has not yet been scheduled, but she faces a fine of up to $100,000 and one year in prison and was required to forfeit her interest in three young chimpanzees who are being held at Myrtle Beach Safari and have been exploited for demeaning social media videos and hands-on encounters. Below, please find a statement from PETA Foundation General Counsel for Captive Animal Law Enforcement Brittany Peet:

Another domino has fallen and more will follow for Bhagavan “Doc” Antle and his shameful animal exploitation business, as the terms of his codefendant’s plea agreement for transporting endangered young cheetahs who had been separated from their mothers require her to cooperate with the federal government in its case against Antle for money laundering and wildlife trafficking. He has already been convicted of wildlife trafficking in Virginia state court, and PETA will keep pushing the government to terminate this sleazy showman’s federal licenses and shut down his sinister operations.

More details about Antle’s exploitation of animals are available here.

Photos: ‘Bulls’ in Red Veils at Vatican Call On Pope to Denounce Bullfighting

Following the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, in which spectators chase animals to their deaths in the bullring in honor of Saint Fermin, PETA U.K. is calling on Pope Francis to condemn these gory spectacles often held during Christian celebrations. Today supporters gathered in a cross formation near the Vatican wearing “horns” and red floor-length veils, holding a banner reading, “Catholic Church: Silence Is Violence! Denounce Bullfighting.”

Photos and video from the action are available here.

“The Bible asks us to be merciful to all God’s creations, yet bulls are tortured in the name of saints at some Catholic celebrations,” says PETA U.K. Vice President Mimi Bekhechi. “Pope Francis is widely revered for his kindness to animals, so PETA U.K. is asking him to communicate to the world’s 1 billion Catholics that bullfights violate Christian virtues.”

PETA notes that Pope Francis wrote in his encyclical Laudato Si’ that “every act of cruelty towards any creature is ‘contrary to human dignity’” and that as long ago as the 16th century, Pope St. Pius V banned bullfights for being “cruel” and “removed from Christian piety and charity.” During these ritualized executions, bulls are taunted and stabbed with a lance and several harpoon-like banderillas before they’re killed with a sword.

‘Hey, Bud: Lay Off the Horses, Not the Workers,’ PETA Says

As nearly 400 employees of Anheuser-Busch—maker of Budweiser—are slated to lose their jobs, PETA supporters will descend on the Anheuser-Busch brewery tomorrow to protest the severing of Clydesdales’ tailbones (part of their spines), a cruel mutilation that thwarts the horses’ natural balance and ability to swish away flies and has animal rights proponents boycotting the brand. As PETA recently revealed in a damning video exposé from an undercover investigation, the company has been quietly performing the amputations—either with a scalpel or with a tight band that stops the blood supply to the tail, causing it to die and fall off—for purely cosmetic purposes, just so the horses will look a certain way when hitched to a beer wagon.

When:    Saturday, July 29, 12 noon

Where:    Budweiser Brewery Experience, 1200 Lynch St. (at the intersection with S. 12th Street), St. Louis

“Anheuser-Busch will apparently axe anything, from a Clydesdale’s tailbone to hundreds of jobs,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA is urging the company to show kindness to all by keeping horses’ bodies and workers’ jobs intact.”
