Mayon lava effusion and Strombolian bursts; Fuego nears 10 blasts/hour

Lava effusion, dome growth, and minor Strombolian bursts at Mayon stood out today. Guatemala’s Fuego produced frequent explosions—up to 10 per hour—while Ecuador’s Sangay tallied hundreds of blasts and Peru’s Sabancaya showed a clear uptick. In the United States, Kilauea and Great Sitkin both held at Watch with Aviation Orange.

United States
Kilauea and Great Sitkin kept steady eruption status (Watch / Aviation ORANGE). Shishaldin remained in unrest (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW).

Indonesia
Explosive activity was notable at Ibu (102 explosions; ash to 800 m) and Semeru (108 explosions). Lewotolok recorded 191 explosions with only very low ash near the vent, while Dukono and Marapi produced modest ash plumes. Slope instability and degassing persisted at Merapi, with 111 rockfalls. Unrest continued at Iliwerung, Kerinci, and Raung. Lewotobi remained at an elevated alert, and gas rose about 100 m at Karangetang.

Japan
Yakedake showed increased unrest; a Level 2 restriction remained in place near the crater.

Philippines
Mayon maintained dome growth with active lava effusion and minor Strombolian bursts. Seismic monitoring tallied numerous rockfalls and events linked to pyroclastic density currents, and a persistent crater glow was visible.

Mexico
Popocatepetl emitted gas and steam, and a M1.1 volcano-tectonic quake was recorded; the alert stayed at Yellow Phase 2.

South America
In Ecuador, Sangay produced 297 explosions with ash rising to 1.5 km, while Reventador generated 36 blasts and ash to 1 km. Peru’s Sabancaya increased, with three explosions sending plumes to 2.5 km and a thermal anomaly detected.

Other
Guatemala’s Fuego was highly explosive at times, with up to 10 explosions per hour, incandescent ejections to 300 m, and ash plumes near 1 km. In Costa Rica, Poas remained in eruption (Level 2 – Warning; Aviation Yellow), while Rincon de la Vieja and Turrialba stayed at Level 2 – Warning.
