Volcanic activity saw notable shifts today: the Philippines’ Mayon intensified, Indonesia’s Semeru was raised to Level 3, Colombia’s Purace dropped to Yellow, and ash from Guatemala’s Fuego reached nearby towns. Elsewhere, regular explosions persisted at Sabancaya and Santa Maria, while continuous tremor continued at Taal. Lewotolok’s activity eased even as monitoring still detected numerous explosions.
Indonesia
Semeru (Level 3 – Standby) was elevated after monitoring registered 119 explosions and several rockfalls. Eruptive activity at Lewotolok eased, though 254 explosions were still detected. Low plumes and rockfalls accompanied ongoing activity at Ibu, Merapi, Marapi, and Dukono. Unrest persisted at several others on Levels 2–3, including Raung and Kerinci.
Philippines
At Mayon (Level 3), lava effusion, dome-collapse rockfalls, and minor Strombolian bursts were accompanied by frequent PDC-related seismic signals. Plumes at Kanlaon rose to 800 m, while low-level unrest persisted at Taal with plumes to 300 m and continuous tremor since 21 January.
Mexico
Popocatepetl (Yellow Phase 2) produced gas-and-steam emissions and a M2.4 VT earthquake.
South America
Purace stepped down to Yellow as ash emissions and seismic energy declined and a crater thermal anomaly faded. Peru’s Sabancaya sent ash-and-gas up to 1 km with a handful of quakes; in Ecuador, activity increased at Sangay while eruption at Reventador continued.
Other
Guatemala’s Fuego lofted ash to about 700 m and produced ashfall in San Pedro Yepocapa, Panimache Uno and Dos, Morelia, and Santa Sofia. Nearby Santa Maria saw up to four explosions per hour with incandescent rockfalls, and weak gas rose from Pacaya. In Costa Rica, Poas featured a largely dry Laguna Caliente with low tremor and minor fumaroles, while Rincon de la Vieja and Turrialba remained at Level 2; Irazu stayed calm.
