Marapi volcano (Western Sumatra, Indonesia): major eruption sent ash to 4,5 km altitude yesterday

A spectacular eruption took place from the volcano yesterday.

At about 07:23 local time today, a powerful explosion generated a dense dark ash column. The towering pillar of gas, ash emissions and lava bombs rose about 1600 meters above the summit in the southeastern direction.

The volcano observatory reported a seismic signal with a maximum amplitude of 30.5 mm and a duration of 78 seconds

There is a 3 km exclusion zone around the Verbeek Crater in place.
