Spurr (Cook Inlet, SW Alaska): (13 Mar) The elevated activity at the volcano continues.
During an overflight on 7 and 11 March, volcanologists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory detected significantly increased SO2 concentrations from the Crater Peak’s gas vents (known as fumaroles). This confirms elevated fluid of gas, water and highly likely a batch of magma under the surface. Since gas is much more mobile than magma itself, it typically occurs at the surface before eruption starts. However, eruption might occur within a few weeks-to-months.
