Vigorous lava fountaining from vents in the southwest corner of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater abruptly ceased within a few minutes just before 11:00 AM local time.
Around the same time, at 11:00 AM local time, the lava began draining back into the vent as summit tiltmeters recorded a shift from deflation to inflation. Seismic tremor also significantly decreased during this period. This pattern resembled the pause that occurred on 23 December between 3 and 4 PM, the first eruptive episode. Historically, summit eruptions have spanned days to weeks, and there is a strong likelihood that this eruption will resume if summit repressurization occurs in the coming days.
