Svartsengi volcano update: eruption has subsided as lava flow discharge rate has significantly reduced

An updated lava flow map as of 5 PM local time yesterday: the red line represents eruptive fissures, the yellow area shows the active lava flow field and the grey one portrays previous lava flows (image: <link https://www.ruv.is/frettir/innlent/2024-08-22-virkni-eldgossins-afram-svipud-420078 _blank>ruv.is</link>)

Kristín Jónsdóttir, head of department and geophysicist at the Icelandic Met Office, reported that the eruption’s intensity has significantly diminished.
Recent measurements indicate that the lava flow has reduced to approximately 100 cubic meters per second, which is only about 1/20th of its peak flow at the start of the eruption.

Kristín continues: f“At the onset of an eruption, the lava spreads rapidly. However, with the reduced intensity, its advance has slowed considerably. Now, rather than expanding outward, the lava bed is thickening, with occasional small eruptions from it.“

Currently, it is highly unlikely that the lava flow, which has spread over at least 12 square kilometers and is slowly moving northeast, will reach any infrastructure.
