A lava cooling efforts have been initiated to prevent the lava from overflowing the protective wall at Sýlingarfell yesterday.
This method has been used for the first time since the 1973 eruption of Eldfell volcano, Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar.

When lava began spilling over the barrier, several work machines arrived to contain it. In the afternoon, the decision was made to use cooling. Responders then laid a water pipe, drawing water from a fire hydrant in Svartsengi, to spray the lava. According to reporter Alma Ómarsdóttir, the spraying will continue throughout the night.
