The Instituto Nicaragüense de Estudios Territoriales (INETER) volcano observatory reported that a new, low-to-moderate-sized eruption took place at the volcano on 16 May.

At about 02:20 PM local time, the volcano started to spew abundant grey ash emissions that reached up to 18,000 ft (5,500 m) elevation extending to the northwest.

The explosion (likely) caused light-to-moderate ash fall occurring in several communities in the vicinity of the volcano (Los Ramos, Santa Teresa, La Union, Los Angeles, La Flor, Urbaite, Las Pilas), with a 1-mm-thick tephra layer.

The eruption was accompanied by a continuous volcanic tremor.
This event does not pose an increased danger to the population.
