An intense swarm of small earthquakes had been occurring east of Sýlingarfell on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The oscillation of the ground surface commenced at about 16:00 local time, a tell-tale sign that magma had continued to intrude and push its way into deeper rock layers. The microseismic activity has been centered mostly at the southern end of the eruptive fissure from 18 December. As of 17:30 local time, continuous ground vibrations had shifted towards the south closer to the Hagafell.
