Reykjanes volcano update: Magnitude 5 quake near Grindavik

Location of this morning’s magnitude 5 quake in Iceland

Earthquake activity has again picked up sharply since around midnight. A magnitude 5.0 quake hit early this morning on the Reykjanes peninsula approx. 3 km north of Grindavik, in the center of the area where the inflation has been going on due to magma intruding at depth. This is so far the largest earthquake since the crisis began 12 days ago.

The quake was widely felt on the southern peninsula and also in the capital. If you felt it, you can share your experience and submit a report as well from our detailed quake page!

It is yet unclear what the exact cause of the quake is: it might be a tectonic adjustment caused by accumulated stress during the ongoing magma intrusion causing swelling of the surface, or it could be a new underground rock fracture formed by (and filled with) intruding magma itself.
