The KVERT volcano observatory raised the volcano’s local alert level to „Red“ today.

The alert status change followed explosions generating ash plumes to heights of 4.5 km at 02:00 UTC and up to 7-7.5 km elevation at 04:10 UTC today, respectively. Plumes extended about 26 km to the northeast of the volcano.

The new lava dome (Young Shiveluch) growth appears to ooze out as erupted viscous lava, giving it a smooth, egg-like shape as visible in the latest Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. A thermal anomaly is also being detected in the area of the Karan dome, presumably associated with the new lava dome growth.
