Gas and steam emissions have been detected in the area of La Virgen sector, in a 20-meter-long segment on the Bogotá-Manizales highway, from Fresno to Manizales between the departments of Tolima and Caldas, on 16 May.
The Colombian Geological Institute (Servicio Geológico Colombiano), in collaboration with the Caldas Risk Management Office, Corpocaldas, Transportadora de Gas Internacional and Invías, has made investigations and measurements to determine the origin of emissions (biological and/or bacterial) along with chromatography studies. In addition, an inspection is being carried out if there are more potential gas-leaking cracks.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and temperatures continue to be detected in the affected area by the local volcanological observatory.
During the investigation research, the Invías will keep the traffic in the affected sector safe and fluent, and precautions must be taken.
Authorities of Caldas and Tolima provinces are scheduled to meet to discuss further procedures on 19 May.
Even though gas and steam emissions have been occurring at the volcano slopes, it doesn’t have to pose a tell-tale sign of an impending eruption. In general, the activity of the volcano continues at very low levels with a minor seismic activity and no surface deformation. However, a volcanic origin is not ruled out.
