Shiveluch volcano (Kamchatka): intense lava dome growth continues

Collapsing parts of the lava dome sometimes lift ash plumes (image: volkstat.ru/Alexey Demyanchuk)

The extrusive eruption at the volcano continues.

Visual observations confirm the continuous rise of viscous magma into the growing lava dome. Accumulating magma makes the lava dome partially unstable, which develops into glowing lava blocks and debris avalanches. From time to time, ash plumes separate from block-and-ash flows (so-called phoenix clouds) as it descends the slope.

Emissions of gas and steam plumes with minor amounts of ash reached heights between 12,000 ft (3,700 m) and 16,000 ft (4,900 m) over the past week.

The seismic network detected the continuous seismic tremor.
