The SERNAGEOMIN surveillance camera observed a major explosion in the late afternoon on 9 October. A spectacular tall and dense ash plume rose to an estimated 18,000 ft (5,500 m) height and drifted NW. The strong eruption generated several pumice-and-ash flows, traveling into various directions, caused by an eruption column collapse.
