A phase of intense activity occurred at the volcano over the past two days.
10 moderate pyroclastic flows from the Caliente dome have been observed by surveillance cameras during 30-31 January.
The reason for these flows was accumulation of more and more unstable hot lava material, resulting in a partial collapse of the lava dome and triggering hot block-and-ash flows over the southwestern flanks. Ash plumes separated from pyroclastic density currents (so-called phoenix clouds) as they descended the slopes and reached 4,600 m altitude.
A near-frequent and abundant degassing continues to produce steam-laden plumes which rose approx. 600 meters above the crater.
People are advised to avoid the vicinity of the drainages located on the W-SW slopes.
