Great Sitkin volcano (Aleutian Islands): lava flow field continues to advance

Huge pressure ridges (so-called ogives) wrinkling lava flow surface on the SE crater rim are the result of very viscous lava flows (image: AVO)

The effusive eruption of the volcano continues.
The viscous lava continues to ooze out onto the south and southwest slopes, keeping the flows active and slowly feeding the lava flow field. New SAR images confirm that the area covered by lava flows is estimated to be 1.3 square kilometers.

From the available satellite imagery, lava seems to overflowed the southeastern crater rim and may be expected a new lobe soon.
