The explosive activity of the volcano is accompanied by moderately strong eruptions during the past few weeks.
A phase of intense activity occurred at 16:54 local time yesterday as the situation quickly worsened by a sudden, very strong and intense explosion.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that a tall and dense ash plume seen rose from the island to estimated 13,000 ft (4 km) altitude as can be seen in attached video. Another stronger-than-usual explosion occurred at the volcano at 09:43 local time today.
Explosions generated pyroclastic bombs and blocks ejected up to 1 km away from the crater.

The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs could affect an area of about 2 km distance from the main crater.
