At The Remy on the Trails apartment complex in Houston, a channelized (surrounded by concrete or brick) pond reportedly serves as home to dozens of native red-eared slider turtles. According to locals, the complex has removed a ramp—the semi-aquatic turtles’ sole means of accessing dry ground. Making matters worse, it being egg-laying season for them, any animals unable to reach soil to lay their eggs can become egg-bound, leading to ruptured organs, infection, and eventually an agonizing death. The turtles have reportedly been stranded in the water for more than two weeks already, with only one small basking rock to fight for, leaving the rest deprived of the daily 10-12 hours of sunlight required for Vitamin D3 synthesis—essential for calcium absorption, which prevents metabolic bone disease and ensures a hard shell.
We’ve implored The Remy on the Trails to rectify things—even offering to provide wildlife-specific ramps for free!—but have received no response. Your voice is needed now! Please politely ask the complex to act immediately so that these animals don’t continue to suffer! Note that maintaining a polite tone is essential, as rude correspondence can hinder our efforts.
