Update (April 27, 2026): We are in communication with TransLink. We understand that the faulty netting has been repaired, and no birds appear to be stuck currently. We will be monitoring the situation closely. Thank you to all who spoke up!
Update (April 24, 2026): We understand that TransLink is telling callers that they installed a few one-way exits. Unfortunately, we’re told that the birds do not seem to understand how to use them, and that birds have been seen struggling and dying since those were installed. Please continue to ask TransLink to remove the netting entirely. See gif below, which depicts a bird unable to figure out the exit.

Original post:
PETA has received reports that bird-deterrent netting has been installed at the 22nd Street subway station in New Westminster, BC. Reportedly, some birds are currently trapped behind the netting, while others have already perished—likely succumbing to dehydration or starvation after struggling mightily to escape. Although deterrent netting is meant to be nonlethal, reports of it falling into disrepair or being installed incorrectly therefore leading to fatalities are unfortunately common.
