Heightened activity centered on the Philippines and Indonesia today, highlighted by dome growth and ash-producing bursts. At Mayon, a nascent lava flow and frequent collapses generated about 90 pyroclastic flows, while Indonesia’s Semeru stepped up with ash columns to 2 km and more than a hundred explosions. Lewotobi’s alert was lowered to Level 3 – Standby; Taal produced a brief phreatomagmatic burst, and ash affected communities near Fuego and Santa Maria.
United States
Great Sitkin (Watch / Aviation ORANGE) kept slow lava effusion within the summit crater. Kilauea (Watch / Aviation ORANGE) showed strong glow at both vents. At Shishaldin (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW), a steam plume rose above the summit.
Indonesia
Semeru ramped up with ash-and-gas plumes to 2 km, 143 explosions, rockfalls, and PDCs. Lewotobi produced low gas plumes; its alert was lowered to Level 3 – Standby. Shorter ash emissions and frequent blasts were noted at Ibu (122 explosions) and Lewotolok (212 explosions), with several other volcanoes showing unrest. Lava-dome systems at Merapi and Marapi remained active, with Merapi generating seismically detected PDCs.
Philippines
Mayon (Level 3) maintained heightened unrest with a new lava flow, numerous PDCs and rockfalls, and ongoing inflation. Taal produced a brief phreatomagmatic burst that sent a 900 m plume after a 6‑minute precursor (Level 1). Kanlaon emitted ash, including a 15‑minute event, with plumes up to 900 m (Level 2).
Mexico
At Popocatepetl (Yellow Alert – Phase 2), a 95‑minute exhalation sequence lofted plumes to about 1,200 m above the rim.
South America
In Ecuador, Reventador sent ash-and-gas to 800 m, while Sangay showed reduced activity with gas emissions and thermal signals. Peru’s Sabancaya produced a moderate explosion to 2.1 km and showed slight inflation. Colombia’s Purace exhibited shallow rock‑fracturing quakes, tremor pulses, and degassing from crater fissures.
Other
In Guatemala, Fuego generated ash plumes and explosions with ashfall in nearby communities, while Santa Maria produced ash, glow, and short‑runout PDCs. In Costa Rica, Poas recorded frequent long‑period quakes; Rincon de la Vieja and Turrialba stayed at Level 2 – Warning, and Pacaya showed fumarolic activity.
